There are a lot of Liberals who want to take my guns away... And tell me how far my target should be before I shoot...total nonsense.

Congrats on your successful hunt.

Took all the way to the 5th post this time!!!

Ethics are in the mind of the shooter.Mine are different than yours which are different from Jim's which are different from John's.

Congrats on getting your moose.

Congrats! Great Job.

I've seen people do worse within' 50 yards.

Sad to see "ethics" comments of this nature when you clearly did a great job on the hunt.

Agreed.

Here on CGN opinions are like a$$holes, everyone's got one... The OP didn't ask for our opinion if we all thought it was ok to shoot a moose at 700+ m.

Happy hunting...

While others have their opinions, my opinion is that the ethical range to shoot a moose depends on the person behind the rifle. Your average hunter won't be able to make that shot. Someone that routinely practices/shoots at that range is another story. You have to do what you believe is ethical, not what others believe. Congratulations on the shooting.

The bold is the important part. Based on the OP's first post, he neither trained nor practices for such distances, let alone does either routinely.

Congrats on your moose, many would do a lot worse at 100 yards. I don't see a problem at all if you have the right equipment and practice.

See my comment above, same rules apply. If you can't make the shot at 100 yards, then don't.

Thanks for the congrats all. Took me 2 yrs of building rifles and loads and practice to make it all come together. Satisfying.

It appears you need more practice, 3 rounds to down an animal is nothing to brag about. My next question is how did you recover the animal if there was water separating you?

The numbers would suggest you will probably be clipping a tag for the wolves soon but hey, good on you- at least you kept shooting.
In a 10 mph cross wind you have around 3 feet of wind drift (approx.), most moose have a 18" clean kill zone (approx.).
Wind normally blows over water with little ability to gage it (IMO).
And I thought a moose in water was a no go? (I also thought a shot over open water was too)
I guess I still have a lot to learn... ...

Fine, lets take the hunting ethics debate out of the equation. By the OP's description of the event it sounds like if that was a 3-shot group printed on paper instead of hide it probably would be on the worse side of 30" or so. So thats approximately a 4moa group. Pretty poor shooting by most peoples standards.

Where do you get your targets that move after you shoot them? Is there an equation for MOA for these moving targets?

I was beating myself up for not being able to hold a 12"x12" plate every shot at 720m today. 15mph gusting to 25mph winds made this pretty challenging. Maybe I should be shooting at 30" plates so I can give myself a pat on the back.

Congrats and dont listen to the haters.
Nice job at this distance.
I'm sure the first shoot would have been deadly if you have wait. So you just finish him off with the third shoot.
Soud good to me.

Disgusting. Hunters like this make it harder for the good ones. You won't find a single Rod & Gun Club that supports #### like this. Shame!!!

Mine would!

And apparently your club is the Liberal Party of Canada!!! For shame judging how someone else chooses to hunt. You sound like the holier than thou set that thinks black guns don't belong in the woods. Shame on you for chastising another hunter for how he hunts! Shame!!

Good shooting OP. My personal best was a white tail at 487. Shame on me I guess.

I don't think there is a set distance to far too take the shot, but it varies by person. This was to far for you. Clearly you have no idea where you are sending your bullets if you miss the first 2. What if that bullet had hit 2" somewhere different and the animal had ran, then you definitely wouldn't have been able to make the kill shot judging by your shooting and he would have close to a km head start and a lake between you. You got lucky.. At the mooses expense. Hunters should know when to take the shot and when to hold and get closer and you need to relearn that. You got lucky.

BS. It's not about taking unnecessary chances. It's about taking an animal quickly and humanely. Sometimes that means being mature and letting an animal live another day.

Sounds like someone playing sniper, beyond his abilities, and at the mooses expense. Great ego trip if you're not the animal taking bullets. Past 600 you're opening yourself up to a lot of variables that make hitting live things iffy unless you really know what you're doing, the OP's account of his "hits" seems to bring that into question. A man's got to know his limitations. Sorry not impressed.

OP posted full info honestly. Maybe he will learn from
the responses to become more circumspect.

Nope. Just like to stir up the holier than thou haters, then will drop off gun nutz again. These people are why I don't shoot competitions. Don't want to spend my time with that set.
