Howdy!
A friend will be looking to by a Moose hunting rifle. I own a Rem 700BDL .270 and am quite pleased with it. I'm curious to know what is the feeling amoung CGN. He will be looking for a caliber that will do the job up to 300 meters. He feels he will routinely shoot at 150 to 250.

I agree...your .270 would be fine for most mid range shots you are talking about, as long as they can shoot it well, put the bullet where it needs to go, and they use a premium hunting bullet like a Barnes, Accubond, A Frame, etc...Don't skimp on the bullets, you only fire MAYBE 10 rounds a year at game, you can afford to but the best

Long Shots

Wow! That's some long shooting, considering these are forest/swamp critters. I shoot a .338 win mag 225gr bullet out of a Sako. I've practiced a lot at 300m, but the longest shot I've ever taken was 40m, and the shortest was maybe 8m.

Not all moose stick to the forests and swamps. Many moose now live in farm country and can be found along open fields, where longer shots are often presented.

I stand corrected.

You're right. Up at our camp until recently, a long shot was maybe 20m if the leaves were still up and about 40m if they were down. Since clear cutting and roads went in we ranged a 423m shooting range up on the mountain.

The 7mm Rem Mag is very popular with a lot of my hunting buddies but if you can handle the recoil, the 300 Win Mag would be the way to go. This will give you the combination of killing power and distance, and ammo is very easy to find and affordable.

My relatives use the 7 mm RM for all their hunting (moose, deer, etc) but I use the 300 WM for moose and the 35 Whelen for deer. I find the heavy bullets of the 35 Whelen (250 gr) to be ideal for bush country deer hunting.

I use a TC Encore Pro-Hunter with 28" barrel in 300 WM for moose but will try to go to 375 H&H Mag next season if I find the recoil manageable.

PS. My relatives are from down East also (NB)

The only way to beat the basic & boring 30-06 for the average hunter shooting average deer or moose at an average distance is to use a .280:dancingbanana::D
....... which of course offers nothing over the 270 he already owns. :p

A 270 with a good bullet would be fine for ANY moose hunting we would see here in NB.

Hi have friends that shoot the 270 win for moose and it seems to work well. I use a 30.06 shooting a 180 nosler accubond clocked in at 2780 fps. I hunted moose this fall on agricultural land and after 5 days of hunting the nearest I got to my calf moose was 430 yards (measured with 2 laser range finders). Way to long a shot, I know, but it worked out fine with three fatal hits out of 4. One in the heart, one through both lungs and one through the liver into the gut with only minor damage. The fourth shot was a miss. I am confident that the same gun and load can reliably kill a big bull under 200 yards. In the end the caliber does not matter as much as the shot placement. Moose are not as tuff as other big game so as long as you are double tapping the lungs you can kill them with almost any legal caliber. If the 303 british can kill tens of thousands of moose over the last 100 years I am sure that the 270 winchester will do just as good a job. Pick heavy for caliber bullets like the 140 or 150 grain.

I shoot a 300WM for moose. They don't go far after the shot and usually drop right in there tracks. A 270 WIN is nice but if your shot placement isn't great then they can run for some distance. Nothing worst than tracking a wounded animal and not knowing if your going to make the recovery or not.
