Moose gun

Shot placement

It's been said already but shot placement counts...get close enough with a .22 in the skull and you'll take a moose. I prefer my .308...my longest kill was 357 yards (verified with range finder). I once hunted with someone who shot a 30-30, the moose stumbled when he hit it, I shot shortly after and knocked it over...four hooves in the air (approx 200 yrds).

.270 has put 4 Bull Moose and 3 Bull Elk in my freezer . Shot's between 100m - 300m with Barnes 140gr . Been lucky , havn't needed a second shot yet .

I have the .300 win mag in a Tikka m695. The first couple moose I killed were with a Polish scoped Tack drivin Nagant. Both were bang flops. First was 150 yds next was 225 yards. That round hits the moose hard. You can here it hitting. The ammo was S&B 180 grain. My father in law has a scoped .303 and he always fills his tags. His hunting buddy uses a 6.5x55 swede and he also always fills his tags. I think any caliber .270 and up will do with a capable marksman who knows his and the rifles limitations.

I think killing moose is over rated, particularly on east coast. I have killed then with slugs( 12 and 20),30-30,243,303,308,30-06,270,6.5 x 55,7 x 55.,and 7 rmag
Here the most used gun is a 303 british. Shoot them in lungs and they stumble and drop dead.Shoot them in neck or head and they drop in tracks.I have never seen any advantage of one caliber over another.Shoot them in the lungs and wait 15 minutes. They dont go far.

Shoot whatever you have that you have confidence in.Or if you want a new gun, hell get one for moose hunting, buy what you want in a 25 caliber or bigger and you'll be fine
Just practice and shoot smart

I went with a 300WM as my moose gun, I use 200grn Nosler Acubonds. 4 moose down with that rifle.

Before that I used a 7mmRM, took a few moose with that one including one at just over 400m. And before that I used a 308, also effective on moose.

270 if thats what you like, use a good bullet, I would pick a heavier one.

Guns? I don't need no stickin guns to kill no moose, I'm just gonna hide in the mud like Sly did in the Original "Rambo" and fillet it with my knife! :)

Personally, I like my 308. I know a lot of guys that use 7mm and 300WSM. I'd like to get one using my 45-70 this year. I think the critical thing has all ready been brought up. Shot placement and bullet selection. Choose a good bullet, and make damn sure you hit it where you want!

smoke a moose in the lungs with a .270, .280, 7mm, .308, 30.06, 300wsm, 300winmag, .338 and it will go down. Thats what everyone I hunt with uses. My dad shot a .280 for over 30 years and killed lots of moose. We both use a .300winmag now and kill just as many moose. One ol timer used to use a 25.06 for moose, he'd still use to today but can't handle the walks anymore so he had to give up hunting.

You recoverd 338 win mag bullets from broadside shot on moose? The only way I've found a moose to retain a 338 slug is on a double front shoulder shot, and even then it better be a generously sized moose. I've recovered more .375H&H bullets than 338 win mag bullets...

Me too.
I have recovered a significant percentage of bullets from game shot with 375 rifles.

If you read about this phenomena you will find that most guys believe 375 bullets are under-stabilized.
I just finished a 375 Ultra project that I went with a faster than normal twist rate. I read about some guys in Africa doing the same thing and they found a significant increase in penetration.

We shall see!

I agree with Fred. If you go hunting with 3 guys around here guaranteed 1 of them is carrying a .303

I've seen that too Dave. Gotta be the most popular rifle caliber in Newfoundland!!..Just bought a Enfield #5 jungle carbine .303 myself, that I intend to retire the .30-06 with for the next moose season..Can't wait.:D

I've dropped moose with bow, muzzleloader, and .270 Win. Moose became mythical bullet resistant creatures about the same time the uber mags were marketed.

I like the special narrow hard bakelite recoil 'pad' they put on that model, along with the conical recoil enhancer at the muzzle.
