Hey guys just want to vent and maybe get some help

My Dad, my friend and I are trying to plan a Moose hunt but are running into an issue.

We dont know how to find crown land that has road access for ATV's and trucks I cant find anything on the MNR atlas thing.

My Dad is getting old nealy 70 and wants to be with me on my first moose hunt but I'm afraid we wont get this figured out.

Any help or advice would be amazing!

Thanks

Is this the atlas you are talking about?

Have a look at the Backroad Mapbooks:

Hope this helps.

You could consider floating down a river in a canoe. Nice way to hunt when the weather is good, you'll see the animals, and it's not very strenuous - at least not until after you actually shoot one.

Just decide how far you intend to drift in a day and have someone meet you down stream in the evening.

Take this advice and enjoy Mattagami River ride. Awesome experience.

First thanks for the replys!

dudu: thats the atlas I'm talking about I'm having a hard time finding the right color they really need to change the colors of the areas instead of only being one shade different.

Boomer: This might be the way to go but what if we float out of the WMU?.....and how do we know the land is Crown? can you use a motor powered boat?

I'm not an Ontario resident but normally you can't hunt from a powered vehicle, this would include an outboard on a boat I would think. Certainly it would be the responsibility of the individual hunting to ensure he was hunting within the correct game hunting area. My advice would be to go far enough north that there is no private land, and it's probably a good idea to stay clear or First Nations' lands as well. Your game branch must provide maps with the hunting areas indicated, and you could contact the county, RM, or LGD or what ever the local government calls itself there to find out where the crown land is. Back when I was trucking there looked to be lots of accessible moosey country between Sudbury and Timmins, but I have no idea what areas in Ontario are open.

haha sorry my dad smokes 2+packs a day he is still in good shape but not the best he is starting to tell the same stories over and over he has forgot my Bday and how old I am on mroe then 1 occasion.

In what WMU's would we have the best chance on getting tags we are going to apply as a group to get the benifit of both draws.

You need to figure out how many Pool 1 hunters you have then go to page 47 of the 2008 regs to see which units have guaranteed group sizes of that number.

If you are pool 2 the only chance you have for a tag is in the far north which generally have no roads anyway. Or you can hunt calves, almost anywhere, but check the Regs.

Once you figure out which units work for your group size let us know and people can give you info on road restrictions.

We are 100% Pool 2 I have never hunted Moose my friend Mike hasent either and my dad hasent Hunted Moose since 1985 so it looks like for Pool 2 these WMU's have the best chance.........13, 15B, 21A, 28, any advice?

I live and hunt in WMU 28-29, lots of private land is owned by forestry or mining companies and they don't mind hunters on there land, and private individuals are ok with it if the property is far enough from town because they can't inforce it anyway, unless it's farm land or gated or posted or has a family home or camp near by you should be fine, drive or walk bush roads, sit on a clear cut or drift a river are all good methods.

As Pool 2 you have zero chance of getting a bull or cow tag in any of the WMUs you have listed. You could probably get a tag in one of the far north units but there are no roads.

Just pick a WMU and apply this year. This will put you into Pool 1 for next year with a chance at a bull or cow tag. Your moose license for this year can be used to hunt a calf moose in pretty much all WMUs (some WMUs also draw for calves so read the regs)

If you want a tag this year contact an outfitter, they get so many tags per year, and they can help you out with lodging, roads and such, but they cost $$$$.

Thanks for the info guys it really sucks its setup this way its not first timer friendly thats for sure.

I was looking at using this outfitter "www.rufuslakeoutfitters.com" for logging only but if I can only hunt a calf I dont know if its worth it to plan a 7day hunt around a calf.

getting more frusterated.....lol.....what WMU's have the best chance for us to draw Bull tags WMU 3,4,5,6???

i can't speak for any WMu but the ones in my area, 28-29-30 but your chance of getting a tag in pool 2 is pretty much 0, and even in pool 1 you could get in 2 years or in 15, get a group together, apply this year regardless if you go hunting then next year apply as a group and hope for the best, or maybe do a bear/calf hunt this year so you don't apply and stay home.
