Moose Hunt(Help)

wow... i can't believe my comments stired up this much crap
for your FYI bone collector.... I have hunted all over western canada, yukon and have spent several months in resolute bay where polar bear "meet and greets" are a daily occurance.
I just still can't believe that you are reacting to this the way you are....
I mean no insult to any of your intelligences but this is ridiculous.
I never stated it was bear heaven... i know of places that are. But sittin up by the forestry radio tower, up on the big bluffs by witch mnt.... i counted 5 seperate bears in one afternoon. They were all polite to me :D
The fellow who started this thread admits to never being successful at moose.. maybe i should not have perceived that as a lack of hunting experience. Also, what i say about the area is true and if you don't like what i'm saying ... don't read it.
how many times have you met big momma blackie and her cubs while pullin a big hunka meat through the bush.... how often have you woke up in your tent to grizzley sniffing at your door...
excuse me mr... I'm a guide outfitter or my friends are... we never encounter problem bears.
I wasn't talking about problem bears... i was talking about regular moseyin on through the forest bears.
but what do i know.... I'm just a dumb ol metis hunter who spends about 6 months of the calendar year in the bush hunting and fishing coastal watersheds.
BTW.. the fellow who fended off the grizz in grand prarie.... a freind and co worker of mine... ILWU local 502

this is just stupid.... a pissing contest on the internet because i caution a guy about an area he does not know.... anyone for going back to high school... not me ... cheers boys.

Settle down folks. Lets not take it to heart - this stuff is starting to get way to personal.

I will say this tho - If you spend six months in the bush 45apc.. he's got ya beat :D (Not that i give much weight to that kind of stuff.) Bone knows his stuff (which is different sometimes than 'he knows his manners admittedly) and he does live right there. Sitka is also another whom i'd tend to listen to.

I'm not sure i saw what it was you said that started all this off so i can't say who's right and who's wrong and such, but lets just all settle down and relate whatever our personal experiences have been. 1 month a year, 6 months a year in the bush, or 10 or whatever, it's all time spent and we all have experiences.

If you are after mulies or elk, and it is known that grizzlies frequent the area, bring a 375 or a 338. They will certainly pack the punch required to drop your chosen quarry, and will also be handy should a sow grizzly decide you have come too close to her cubs, or her kill. Or better yet, she has decided she wants your kill. As far as the ungulate you are persuing, it will be just as dead whether you hit it with a 270 or a 375, dead is dead, and you can't make somethign deader than dead. See where i am going with this. COMMON SENSE, you should look into it before calling fellow hunters paranoid for having it.

Actually - as a point of interest (and not to get into a pissing match), it's generally accepted that you're usually better off with whatever gun you know and practice with the most. It will make more of a difference than calibre or cartridge as a rule.

For example - if you HAVE a 375 you shoot regularly, then yeah that'd be the gun to take. But if you've been shooting your 30-06 for years and know it backwards and forwards and have run hundreds of rounds thru it - you'd generally be better off with that than, say, borrowing a buddy's 375 and running a box thru it.

Proficiency with the firearm is often cited as critical in bear defense situations. A 30-06 round in the right place is better than a 416 in the wrong place.

So if you're going to borrow a bigger gun - get ahold of it early in the year a few times and practice with it till you really know that gun and can make snap shots easily.

I can agree with that, I just figured on more guys like me (i've been shooting gophers with the 338 to brush up for elk season, also whacked a couple yotes with the 358 last night) but since i alraeady made my last statement, i will shut up:D

BTW, bone collector, no hard feelings, just getting into the spirit of this place. Most of the other sites i frequent dont tolerate #######s, so i never get to be one

ROFL - i know the server's been screwing up and that you didn't mean to do that - but i must admit it's kind of funny to see a guy get his 'last word' in 5 times :D

hehe, that's funny
and to you fine gentlmen from up country, bone collector included... let's all stop the posturing. I wasn't trying to scare the guy off hunting up there. I am envious of you guys for having all that in your back yard. i'm gonna put this to bed.... and just say.... when you go out in the woods today, may you be in for a big surprise, when you go out in the woods today... get yerself a honkin moose 1 minute after sunrise
good luck to all, bears or no fricken stupid ass bears :D

Reading all this stuff about bears, is making me sick follow these rules :

1 repect bears, but if your scared of bears stop hunting before you end up shooting someone thinking that it was a bear.
2 dont be stupid in bear country.
3 follow rules 1 and 2 and you should be fine
And you should be fine
