My 14 year old son got drawn for our special moose season here in Saskatchewan and we leave on Saturday morning for a weeks hunt. His teachers just said good luck and have fun. I'm looking so forward to spend this time in the outdoors with him. We camp about 15 miles off of the roads and have to get into camp with our quads and a boat. I hope the ruffies are going to be plentiful as we aren't going to take lots of food.
The gas prices are cutting into our budgets big time. Hopefuuly I will have some pictures to post when we get back of a very happy young boy with his first moose.

"...we aren't going to take lots of food..." Take lots of grub. Even if it's cans of beans and stew. There's nothing that will ruin a hunt like being hungry all the time. You know how much a 14 year old will eat at home. It's more when in the bush. You can't rely on living off the land.
 
You are right about that Sunray. I'm just hoping that the grouse hunting will be good to make sure we have enough, I have the meals all planned for everyday and we are taking extra deer steaks to make sure we won't go hungry, but the grouse are suppose to be one of our meals anyhow. My wife love baking so she is going to make a lot of goodies to take the edge off the boy's hunger.

I always pack way more cans of food then I need, they don't go bad, and I won't go hungry. And beans go with any dish

Excellent advice :)

Some other things that always go good...

Cheese and lunch meat - a quick snack that'll keep you going and easy to take out to the feild.

Thos individual packs of instant oatmeal - takes just a little hot water, is hot and tasty, fast, and last so long they will be the only thing besides cockroaches that survive a nuclear strike so if you don't use 'em you're good for next year. They pack small too.

Protein bars. Brilliant food - they'll keep you going, fit in a pocket and are light.

Spaghetti-chilli-soups ... make 'em yourself, and freeze 'em. That way they extend the life of your cooler ice and they're cheap and easy to make when you're tired. Just warm and serve.

Rice. Lotsa rice. :)
 
Sounds like a great trip! You wiil have more fun than ever before. This will be a very memorable hunt weather you get one or not. Good luck!

Well we got back from moose hunting late wednesday night and we got a nice bull. My sons first moose and way to much work to get this swamp donkey out of the bush. If someone could post a picture for me I can send it to their email. My son was very happy and the grouse hunting was great.

I sent the pics to Bigredd, I hope he can put them up for me. My son was very happy.. It's 41 1/2" spread on this one and very tasty, He shot it with a 270 rem pump @ about 100 yrds. 1 shot in the lungs and another through the bottom of spine. He went about 250 yards back into the bush but not before crossing a ditch with water up to my ass. Me and my brother had a hell of a time getting him out of the bush. It took us about 51/2 hours to split him up and carry him out.
