Moose hunting in BC

Retrieval can be a battle but it's just part of the deal, I bring a heavy plastic tarp (like truckers use) and drag the quarters, with two guys it isn't the end of the world. You don't have to go in fifteen miles either, usually just one or two. My last bull was two miles off the end of a dead end goat path in region 7, countless trucks drive the goat path but never take the hike, I was told there are no moose there. Sign certainly indicated otherwise and we connected the first evening.

Anyone that thinks retrieving moose is bad (and it can be), try bison! Especially when it's -30 as it often is in the bison season, and they're nearly twice as heavy in every aspect. Or even just backpack mountain game. The physical work in retrieving is just part of hunting and a handy filter that preserves ~90% of the area off the roads often pretty untapped. When you see an area from the air you quickly notice maybe 1% is visible from the roads and trails. A floatplane lake is a perfect option too if you're looking to keep the physical side down but get way out there. Hardly an air access only lake in the peace country that won't produce in a couple days for moose.

Moose numbers have been down in my area (Babine Lake) for a few years now. Strictly anecdotal but seeing more sign lately. Saw a nice healthy cow who was carrying last week. There are large wolf packs operating on the lake. They are shot on sight around here by most people so we do not see them very often, but they don't mind leaving their tracks outside the house at night. The snow pack is low this winter so that can be a positive for moose. The local guide takes a lot of moose off the lake very season so that is also a major factor.

lotta wolves in the pinkut/bluejay/augier area as well , we found a couple recent kills near our "usual" spot. Ended up a successful trip , not too many other hunters around , but lotsa wolf tracks and scat in and around the sweet spot moose areas.
anyone know if they have been doing any culling up that way as part of the provinces wolf cull program?
that area could sure use it.
we didn't see any bigger bulls on our trip , just immatures and such. We are most likely gonna give that area a rest for a couple years.

I do most of my hunting on private land now. Tired of heater hunters that just pound the roads and only get out to shoot.

If I am in public land I hike in the bush. Trust me. If you are off the roads you won't find lowermainland pavement pounders. If you do come across some one they are usialy in the same mind set and a joy to talk with.
