Thanks, chinook. We arrived late on Saturday evening, opening day. On the way up, saw a cow and a young bull (still in velvet) inside Gros Morne National Park, of course, just outside my area. Went in Bateau's Road and saw another young bull (a six pointer) at our intended campsite. But it was quite dark, we didn't see him for long before he hoofed it into the bush, and we weren't particularly interested in a 5 minute hunt in any event.
Hunting all day Monday, but the weather wasn't particularly great. Saw another cow that evening, but she was 2-3 km away across a pond, so we just glassed her for about an hour as she fed peacefully in a grassy marsh.
Tuesday was beautiful, but we hunted the whole day without seeing much of anything beyond a gazillion snowshoe hares, a silver fox (well, he was black, actually), lots of ducks and geese, and an owl that hung around the campsite.
We were giving up for the day and returning to the campsite in the fading minutes of daylight. My partner had stopped the truck on the main road and I walked alone the kilometer or so into the campsite. You never know. Anyway, as I climbed the knoll where our camp was located, I saw a black shape where none had been before. A bright half moon was shining behind me, and I kneeled down to get a better look through the scope.
There she was. Silhouetted against the sky not 50 feet from our camp and about 70 yards from me. She stood broadside looking at me, no doubt having heard me walking the path. A single shot from my .30-06 took her straight through the heart and she collapsed on the spot. The 180 grain Remington Core-Lokt passed through her lower front leg on the other side without striking any bone. There was another moose there, but I only heard it running off through the bush and didn't see it.
We were able to shine the lights of the truck on the site, and back it up to put her aboard, which was a major bonus that night. I would have never thought I would have had an easier lug than last time, which was just 150 yards from the camp in the other direction. But it was. Amazing. A great trip. 8)
