Hi guys,
I`d like to go moose hunting next year but i can`t find a place to go... See i`m leaving for afghanistan very soon and i wasn`t able to find a good place on my own with all the trainning here in Valcartier.. So i`m asking you guys if you`re looking for a partner or if you know someone who could help me. I don`t mind going in the Beauce area but Gaspé is a bit to far for me :). This wouldn`t be my first hunt since ive been hunting deer for a while but it would be my first moose season and i`d be very happy to go with someone who could teach me a few things...

Cheers,
Rémi

i dont mind goin west and i wouldn't mind driving a few hours too

i checked with the association and its kinda pricey... 300$ a year... but i guess its the price to pay if you want access to 6000acres

Rémi,
Some of the best Moose hunting in our whole country is in Matane. About 5 hours drive from the base in Valcartier. I know of many folks that will do it camping because the cost of the outfitters in the area will cost you an arm and a testicle. Ya can`t swing a dead cat without hitting a moose around there. Many folks who have been talk of seeing 30-50 in a weekend!
Good Luck

P.S. Stay safe over there and remember that your country is proud of you.

that is untill recently of course, autumn 2008 will probably go down as one of the worst season for quebec moose hunters, I heard even people near Gaspé were struggling

weather DOES change and the government will have to adapt the laws and seasons in consequence

good luck with finding a group, there are some people looking for partners on lespac.com too

Farmers here are asking for, and getting, up to $1000 for 100 acres. And that's only for deer. If you show up in the Spring thinking the land is yours for turkey, you would be in for a bit of a surprise.

As for Matane, 2008 was just as nuts as 2006 (the last time I was there). I forget the exact count of moose we observed but it was over 30 for the 3 days we were there. This was inside the park, though.

$ 1000.- for permission to hunt 100 acres of private land ? Starts to sounds like hunting in Europe, where you, after the shoot, can buy the meat at the going rate, or after the hunt, try to buy on your meat at a puplic auction....

Huntable land south of Montreal is either already occupied, with a waiting list, or is owned by hunter-unfriendlies. Unless you have relatives or a VERY close friend with land, then you're pretty much SOL. Although I did give a hell of a deal to a farmer on an old pick-up truck I had in exchange for 2 seasons. But you see, now his son is old enough to want to do something with that land and I'm being kicked out. So I've got a custom deer rifle being built and as it stands right now, nowhere to use it but the range. It sucks.

thats why i dont mind driving north/east/west, i love hunting but 300-1000$ is pretty expensive one moose... as for deer/turkey hunting im pretty lucky i hunt on a 100acres land for free... thanks for all your advices btw

Cheers,
Ray

We used to hunt moose here: 47.109532,-74.071026. The problem up there is that even though it's crown land, some yahoos try to secure their areas by putting up signs "occupied, 2007-2012". Nothing to stop you from hunting there, legally speaking. A tad out of your way, though.
