Wow, my husband and I went to a "workshop" on Moose hunting last night at our local shooting club. Neither of us realized that Momma Moose make many different calls. Who knew the art of calling moose could be so elaborate!
Not me......!!
 
If you ever hear it in the wild, and you are very close its wickedly eiry

Been within 30 metres on a cool crisp morning, heard and watched it all, sat quiet heard the bulls calling back, getting closer & closer, the bull showed himself, then............

BOOM, it was all over, meat for the boys.
 
Last year, I spent 8 full hours at my moose stand in the rain while my husband and his buddy were busy eating chilli in the camp..... Did I see anything? Nope..... not a thing, but I seriously believe that we went too late. This year, we will hunt the first or second week instead of the last one. There were fresh tracks, but no moose!
The week before, a buddy of ours was on stand and blew his nose & was answered by a moose. That's kinda weird if you ask me..... Imagine the sound? Eek!
I would love to learn the real art of moose calling. All the differnt types.
Last spring we saw a mamma & her 2 babies when we went in May. What a pretty sight!
I cannot wait to experience the whole deal!
 
Young bull moose, especially, are extremely easy to call in, early in the rutting season. Not a bit unusual for the moose to answer to the fellow that blew his nose.
Foresters working in the bush chaining, where they called one aborted word signals to each other, regularily had moose come to them for a couple of weeks.
Like so many things, just stick to basics. And don't be bothered trying to learn fancy moose talk, that probably a moose doesn't know anything about.
 
Ive had them come in from many many Kilometers away..seen one come out to a rock on a beach..and then continue down the ebach towards me...that rock was over 5 KILOMETERS away..

Several nites later a cow cam to the beach and started calling..she was so LOUD that Im sure if the bull I called heard me from over 5 kilometers she could be heard 10 plus kilometers she was incredibly loud...

I was 15 when I heard one for the first time. I was sitting in some conifers on the edge of a dry swamp when a bull started making his way down the mountain on the far side. He was pi$$ed! Grunting, snarling, snorting - branches and small trees cracking and breaking. He was over a mile away but the finger prints are still evident in my gun stock.

We got picked for Matane in 2006 and they have a few different strategies over there. First, they don't use the female call - there's just too many. You are much more likely to attract a bull with a bull call where the population is that dense (3 per square km) - at least, that's their take. To add to the effect, they recommend heading down to your local butcher and asking for a beef scapula (shoulder blade). Once dry, they make a sound identical to a moose antler when rubbed across branches and shrubs.

We got picked again this year - I can't freakin' wait.
 
One thing one has to remember is that these over-###ed bull moose are dangerous. I have been chased up a tree by one and a game warden friend was also once chased up a tree by an overly agressive rutting bull.
It takes only a second for them to go into attach mode. The hair from their head to the middle of their back goes straight up, their front feet go into a tippy-toe mode and they take short steps as they approach. At this point they are not fooling!
I once stood twenty feet from one in this mode, as he was slobbering and licking it with his lips. I had the 270 pointed at his gaunt body, but he actually couldn't see me as I stood perfectly still, in front of alders that broke up my outline.
Fully ten minutes later he started to move away and I could start down the slide, to where my truck was, ¼ of a mile away. When I was just about to my truck I gave a cow call and he litterally started to race down the slide.
Strangely, I was hunting at the time and could have legally shot him. But who would eat a thing like that?
