Last few days I have had a moose hanging out in my yard and I am not impressed.

It shows little fear, and no fear of my dog(Great Pyr). I don't like worrying about my dogs or my daughters.

I live in the middle of no where, and have take a few very close shots at it to scare it away. She keeps coming back, and is really not that scared. I could call the fish cops and get rubber bullets, but I am unsure I want them involved.

Anybody have any good ideas?

Paintball gun filled with OC balls? :)

Firecrackers, bear bangers etc? I know you said a few close shots didn't scare it off, so don't know how well that will work.

Pepper spray?

Moose in yard ? I came for me I was scared for my life. Thats why it ended up cut and wrapped in the freezer. Really Mr fish officer that is what happened.:D

I was thinking of a big a** can of Bear Scare myself.

On a side note I'm really surprised the Great Pyr didn't ward her off. I was on the wrong end of one of those a while back until the owner properly introduced me and the doggie. Not an experience I want to repeat.

And that is what has me most worried. I don't trust that moose at all.

They sometimes act like that, I mean loosing fear, when they have the brain-worm disease.
I've seen some of those infected moose in a shared moose/deer area.
Maybe calling the game keepers is the best thing to do, if you have nothing you don't want them to know, of course.
Just because if this one is infected, there may be a bunch of them infected too.

Would fish and wildlife not remove the moose for ya?

Around here they usaully hand out rubber shotgun slugs. I have heard mixed results about them.

I really don't want the fish cop's advice, I would rather deal with it myself, and they may not like the way I wil deal with it.

What kind of shape is it in? Does it have a lot of ticks?

Another possible reason it's hanging around might be due to wolves nearby. We've had them snuggled up to within 10 yards of the diesel light plant, damn near starving while watching the bush. They far prefer mans company to the company of wolves, noise or no noise.

I'm betting if you give it a bale and a block of salt somewhere close enough to your buildings so it feels safe but far enough away to not be a threat, it'll hang around until spring and then bugger off. We had 4 or 5 move into an open-ended quonset one winter. They really weren't any trouble; even the dog got used to them. I cleaned out a foot of moose poop and hair in the spring, but that was about all. They didn't even make a mess of the hay the way Elk do - they mostly pruned the saskatoons for us and munched the ends out of three or four bales, and that was it.

As a last resort, like you said, you live well out of the way.....(where is that smiley that *winks*?)

That's a good question. See if she has patches of missing fur. She may be infested and looking for warmth and/or a place to get away from the predators.

If your family is aware of the situation, that is good. Just be cautious. I highly doubt a moose (especially a female) would pose any harm to a human. Just doesn't happen. If you shoot a calf with her mom, the most the mom will do is take a run at ya, but it'll be a fake most likely.
I can't even see a bull moose in mid-rut being a threat.

If she has a disease that affecting her, that could be a problem. The only other problem I see, is if she attracts any predators to your place that COULD pose a safety risk.

If you can't scare her with a gun or the dogs, I can see your concern.

How close can you get to the animal? Maybe you have a new pet.

She fears the wolves more than you and your dog. Unless she is rabid....I couldn't see her hurting anything except your vegetable gardens.

Moose generally don't get rabies from what I know, and I've never heard of one hurting a human.

You may be to late after posting online about it to just wack it right now.

Call the warden anyway, they let some guys i know here in alberta shoot a woulnded one and keep the meat.

She looks to be in fine condition, I have wondered if she is the same cow I had a run in with a few weeks ago. I see no calf, but maybe the wolves got the calf. I was also wondering if she is afraid of wolves. Lots of deer around me bed down very close to homes for safety.
