I know everybody has a opinion as to what will ruin meat more;)
Some of the arguments around our camp are for big and moderate velocity(ie .338 win mag) others for smaller and faster (.300 ultramag)
Some things we throw around are whether or not big bones have been hit, less than ideal bullet placement(we mention names when we say this:D ) and hydrostatic shock.
What do you like?

Shoot them where there is little meat to spoil, and you can shoot them with a bazooka and not spoil meat. Get them in the meat, and you spoil meat. Rib cage shots, behind the shoulder, through the lungs. Have seen them killed by anything from a 243 Win to a 375 H&H. No meat loss if the shot is placed properly. Call it what you like. It's a simple matter.

while you're digging up tired old topics, covered on this board ad nausium, may I suggest a few more?

.270 vs. 280
Bear defence
Tikka T3 vs. Rem 700
scopes on leverguns

(is your name on other boards "BCHunter" by any chance? )

Well, we all try to place our shots carefully, but sometimes bones are hit.Our butcher insists that the smaller the bullet the smaller the bloodshot meat when and if that bullet conects with bone. When things don't go according to plan,it's the shoulders getting the damage. It's all really hypothetical in our camp as the guys that shoot .338 have allways connected with neck or boiler.
The 7 and 300 mag guys are the ones that seem to be puting them through the shoulders.
Bear defence? .223 or .222 rem mag?

b.c Hunter? No, I'm true north where ever I go!
I'll have to take a look at the other boards to see if I'm insulted or not

Double Lung Shot or Heart shot is my preferred shot on a Moose. Jelly the lungs and not the meat!

Cut True North a little slack guys! With the crappy search function on the new CGN, its easy to miss old topics. Besides, who's to say new members don't have something to add?

The big slow and heavy bulets seem to make the least damage.

Also, a god bullet liek th eX bullet will hold together and not blow up in any cartridge, which proabbly acccouns for most of the damage.:)

And yes, you were being insulted.;)

Big bullets at moderate velocities that don't blow up like a grenade are the answer to your prayers, 225grn 338s of sturdy construction, starting out at 2600-2700fps that will penetrate all the way through, do a fine job with very little if any meat loss, even on a shoulder bone shot. bearhunter

Whats the deal Phib... should we just curtail all new posts just because they have been covered before.

Your in a mood today buddy, if you were a chick I would suggest your riding the cotton pony...:p

In answer to the posted question... bullet construction, diameter, velocity at impact and point of impact are all factors in meat damage... there is no easy button for this question.
I prefer bonded core or partition bullets for Moose... just in case I don't make a perfect shot.
I am not a fan of 30-30's or .303brit but most any caliber from .270 to .338 works for me.:)

Thats kind of what I was thinking as far as moderate velocity.I am one of the guys who use a .338 and thankfully my moose have all presented broadside shots or back of the neck at close range. No wasted meat. I made the moderate velocity argument to the butcher, but he has cut up hundreds in his life and still swears by the ubervelocity rounds.wada you do
And yeah the search function sucks
Insulted...insulted, now I go to penalty box and feel shame;)

I would not feel insulted T/N... Phib torments everyone equally.... except for me!
Just go over his posts and see how much real information he offers.... and how much is just plain ragging with no content.

On this board there are thread starters.... and thread killers.
Who's your daddy.
