Moose Mortality - Winter Ticks

I was watching Modern Mountain Man the other day and he referenced a study that was done in Alaska and the collaring of 101 moose calves. Not one made it to their 1st b-day.

65 killed by bears

36 by wolves

The ticks are gross!!!!

Kinda

the moose are a doomed species. Between bears, moose ticks and loss of habitat...not to mention the invasion of deer to thier land. I bet not to many places will have great moose #'s in another 20 years or so.

Wow invasion of deer is going to doom the moose species. I don't believe so. Maybe the other factors yes. Where I hunt moose in northern Ontario, there wasn't a moose to be seen before the mid 50's. Guys from our camps shot deer by the truckload, was plenty of them. Then came the loggers, and the moose moved in. We have only started to see a few deer in the last 5 years.

The area arround Sudbury is pretty bad for moose ticks. Any moose you see in April or May are almost bald, with sores all over their sides from rubbing up against trees to try to get rid of the ticks. I suspect that they are the major cause of moose mortality in this area, killing more than hunting.

True, and i've personaly talked to MNR about the issue and they seemed clueless. Guess they'll have to spend a huge amount of money to find out what some outdoorsman could have told them for free.. Sad for any animal to die that way, I've never seen a moose die from ticks, but i've seen some fox that were trapped and the fur crawled with them..
