My own personal is a Remington 700 BDL stainless synthetic (Not sps) in .30-06 with a mounted Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40. As said, Go 180gr and put the shot where it counts. I'm also looking into getting a marlin 336SS in .30-30 for my thick woods moose excursions. I find a scope to "get in the way" when hunting under 100 yards...as already mentioned.

Judging by the Ontario address you are in a general situation where 80% of your shots will be under 200yds. Don't believe all those fantastic 600 yd shot stories. I've killed moose, deer and bear with 30-30s, .303s, .308s, 8mm and last but not least Husqvarna 9.3x62 in eastern and northern regions of Ontario. They all work just fine for those types of ranges. You can't go wrong with any of them but the .308 is probably one of the most common now and easy to find rounds for. It is not what you use it how you use it....

I've used nothing but a .308 or a 6.5x55 (other than my bow), on deer, moose, blackbear, and pretty much anything you would find in the northern ont. woods. My 6.5 is a sportered 1942 husky with 18.5" barrel and williams peep. With 140 gr. nosler partitions, I have'nt lost an animal yet. I have not had a shot yet that was farther than I felt comfortable with my peep. Very accurate and quick handling rig able to get out there if needed.

What everyone has posted so far is pretty much bang on...in reality, any decent rifle from .270 up will do the job with a well placed shot...I personally like my .338WM, but I wouldn't feel under gunned with my .303.

ok if some of you think my 1943 carl gustav 6.5x55 would work how much is ammo worth, should i put a scope on it or leave the iron sights if it was scoped what should i do about the cartridges being ejected out of the top(possibly hitting the scope)

If its a full wood military rifle, I wouldn't screw around with it. Better off picking up a Husky sporter from Tradex, which should be already set up for a scope.

I started out using a 870 wingmaser for duck hunting, and now cycling a pump gun comes naturally. I actually prefer a pump to anything I have ever used. They come in a variety of great moose rounds, like 35 whelen, and 280, even that 270 you used would be just fine as would a 30-06, or 308.

I am fairly faithful to my '06. I have never fired at a moose at less than 250 yds throwing a 150 gr nosler ballitsic tip and EVERY time I have brought a moose home, never hauling it more than 75' out of the woods. Wife got me a .308 for Christmas, haven't tried it yet, but I am going to next week. Similar performance, less powder. Also picking up my P-14's re-chambered to .303 Improved. Another rifle with great potential. Lots of deer and moose have fallen to the .303 and both of my uncles have shot moose with the venerable .30-30. My Dad only has a .30-30 and gets his deer every year.

Buy a .30-06. You could buy a fancy magnum, but if you start doing stuff like that, an addiction will likely follow, and before you know it, you will have spent your kids college fund and will be hunting moose with a rifle that would be better off in Africa ...

Out of experiance elk seem to be alot tougher than moose and plenty of those have fallen to any caliber 25 and up.Pick which rifle you like best, keep the range honest and put bullwinkle in the freezer.
