Shooting out of a 7mmSAUM approx 3150fps what's everyones oppinions.

It is what I have loaded and I need some confidence building as I am wondering if the bullet is too small?

Properly placed - it will drop a moose. Accuracy is more important than bullet size.

It's moving pretty quick too - it will kill. You've got slightly more muzzle energy than a 30.06, which has killed PLENTY of moose in North America.

Killed many a moose with the old .264 shooting 140 grainers.......hit 'em right and they'll fall over but I wouldn't be trying any marginal shots.

That bullet at 200yds will carry from 2200 to 2400 ft*lbs of energy on target. Enough to do a lot of damage. For comparison a 9.3 X 62 will put about 2250 ft*lbs of KE at 200 yds. The variability is due to the ballistic co-efficient of the bullet. Killing power will also depend on terminal bullet performance.

I've killed moose with my 7mm Rem Mag with 165gr Sierra GameKing, 175gr Rem Corelokt and 160gr TSX. Like Pathfinder said, I would rather go with a heavier bullet but if you don't try to smash too much bones or very steep angles, you should be fine.

Myself and CGNer gpracer used a 140 gr Barnes XLC, launched from my Remington 700 Classic in 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser, to take our moose last year.

But, of course, Eastern Canadian moose are only "babies". :runaway:

I was thinking about the angled and bone shots and if the 140gr would pack enough punch to bash through. I hear that shooting TSX's with smaller weights is much better but just looking to see what people think about the actual energy of a 140 grainer breaking bone at ranges up to and maybe a little past 300 yards.

I have shot several Moose with the 7x57 and 140 grain Partitions. Never had to shoot one twice. Usually the MV was around 2850-2900, so not quite as much thump as your Short Mag, but got the job done fine. Farthest shot was on the order of 325 yards. The Accubond is a bit better on the BC, and should penetrate fine as long as you don't try shooting through big bone. Regards, Eagleye

Last week I have drop a big moose bull at 390 yards with a Barnes Triple Shock 140 grs. bullet. (7MM Ultra Mag.)

Well done job with no lost of meat.

I have 60, and, I hunt only with 7 MM, it's the best.

I'm shooting 140 grain TSX's in my 7mm SAUM for about the same velocity you get. I haven't shot anything with it yet, but will be soon I hope. And I'd have no issues shooting a moose with it either!

I would take a 140 tsx over a 160 gr accubond or partition for moose in any 7mm cartridge, although any of them will do the job. I shoot 160 Accubonds in my 280...should do the trick on anything providing the bullet hits the right spot :)
