I recently fired a bunch of 45 ACP and about 1/2 of them had their case mouths dented nearly in half.It is a bit of a struggle to open them up manually before putting them through the die so:What causes this and what is the cure?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried running them through the sizing die as-is? This usually takes care of dented case mouths.

Some guns will dent the case mouth on ejection, particularly 1911s with the GI style small ejection port.

ive herd whAT tjhaile said. most likely ejection related. possibly dirty action not smooth enough to open ect. take down firearm, clean, lube, inspect for abnormalities reassemble, and retry. has this problem been an issue before?

Try firing one round with an empty magazine inserted. Do it a few times, and see if your slide locks open every time. It should. This will tell you if your pistol is "short cycling" and closing on your fired cases. A larger ejection port may help, but it's usually caused by low pressure loads. Your recoil spring needs to be matched to the ammo you're using.

Thanks for the thoughts men. This is the Thompson 1911 I just had tuned up .The cases all ejected,ie,no stovepipe jams, and the slide holds open.I was thinking short stroking too...perhaps just under strength rounds...or a tardy ejection for one reason or another.

Perhaps a good cleaning and lubing.

How does one tune the ejector?

what innovative said.
probably weak loads.was it with lead cast bullets?i had it do that w/ lead cast bullets and low powder charge...

Severe case mouth denting is usually a result of walking on the cases. In any case, I use a pair of needle nose pliers to gently pry the dent out.

Al-Sway is right. You should visially inspect your cases "before" trying to reload them. That means manually removing any debris or dents that you find.

When you testing your pistol for the "short cycle" symptom, you need to fire the last shot with an empty magazine installed. This needs to be done several times.
