More Dumb Newbie Questions

Hey guys. I just got my CanAm M14 Shorty. My first rifle! I have put about 40 rounds through it...and I really need to work on my accuracy/get used to those iron sights. I know I have read these things before but I am sick as a dog and have nothing better to do so I have a couple questions:

1.The op rod is not supposed to be loose right? If I pull up on the charging handle 9when the action is closed) part of it it moves like... substaintial. Almost like it is going to come out! :eek:

2. Whats up with the bolt release? What is it purpose? I know to release the bolt but when...after mag changes? Once when I changed the mag right when I pulled the empty one out the bolt slammed shut...I need some knowledge handed down to me

3. The safety is the thing on my trigger guard right? I used it once and it has never worked since. It seems jammed or something

4. What other things should I look for...I am going back to school tomorrow but when I am home next I wanna maybe adventure and take it apart :D

5. Did I get a dud?

I actually had the same problems you did with the safety and bolt hold.

For me, I took the rifle apart and thoroughly cleaned EVERYTHING. I got all of the existing grease/oil out of every nook and cranny. I then re-greased and oiled it up and cycled the bolt a few times. It seemed to have resolved the issue.

As for the safety, I thought it was jammed or something, but it turns out it was just really stiff. You'll just need to work it back and forth a few times until it breaks in.

The op rod on mine has some play but it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
