I reloaded some ammo for the .308 and went to the range to see what the little Mohawk likes. I fired 11 rounds that measured 1&1/4 inch wide by 2&1/2 inch high. That might seem like a big group, but the powder and brass was different as well as the bullet weights and seating depths.
I shot some 165 Speer that measured 1/2 inch, the 190 Speer HP measured the same but lower on the target. I fired a couple 180 grain Winchester that grouped into the middle of the target at just around 1/2 inch. The 180 RN Sierra's measured 5/8ths of an inch.
The last shot was at a golf ball at 100 yds....it went somewhere behind the backstop after the 180 grain Winchester Power Point went through it. The new Weaver fixed 6x works well on the Remington 600, I am very happy with the accuracy.......:dancingbanana:

I tried some HEAVY boolitz in the .308 today, I picked up some 220 Hornady's and loaded them up with 36 grains of H4895.
They shot about 1.5 inches to the left of center at 100 yds, but the group measured an inch for three shots. I have heard the the 220's won't stablize in the 308 because of the 1-12 twist. I have debunked that myth today, at least in my gun.

More Mohawk stuff

I heard that some 200 grain bullets won't stablize properly in the 1-12 twist of the 308, so I did some testing today to find out for myself rather than dismissing the idea.
I took the 200 grain Speer Grand Slam and loaded them up and surprised myself with a 1/2 inch group at 100 yards....:dancingbanana:
I shot some Speer 180 grainers as well, I could put a thumb over four shots.
Next is to see if the big 220 Hornady's will stablize with accuracy.

My mowhawk is my bear gun. I shoot 200g partitions and they shoot very well. 1" - 1.5" when I have my scope on. Actually one of the more accurate bullets in that gun. It's pretty consistent for a little knockaround rifle.

Jeez...you shoot them over a Chrony? Are you getting much over 2000 FPS? I think a 180 NPT might be a better compromise bullet for the 308 - more speed and less recoil out of the little rifle. There's really no need for a 220gr 30 cal bullet since premium bullets came out. That being said, they seem to be working for you and the results certainly are interesting.

I had never shot anything bigger than 180's before so I thought I may as well try everything to see what results I get.
The 165 Hornady's I shot today grouped well under an inch, I usually use nothing heavier than 165 out of the .308 for hunting.
