Hi all,
I scrolled through this forum and probably missed this, but......

I have seen lots of good and bad things written about the Norc M4 rifles. Specifically they don't take MilSpec parts.

If I bought an M4, could I
1) successfully replace all the guts (bolt carrier, trigger parts, selector etc) with Colt parts?
2) if I did, would this make the rifle more dependable?

Thanks

1) Yes, and maybe. You are aware of Colt pivot pin diameters?
2) No.
I cannot see any particular reason to justify changing these parts, certainly not from a standpoint of either reliability or cost effectiveness.

M4 review

Thanks Tiriaq. My question about replacing the parts was more with respect to the quality of the Norc parts. I have read from some people that they are crap. Are they comparable quality to Mil Spec parts? ie are they dependable, and thus not needing to be replaced?

Milspec has a very specific definition.
Not all brand name commercial ARs and AR parts are Milspec.
I simply don't see any point in replacing something unless it is known to be broken. You can read many things on the 'net. If there is a problem, then it should be addressed, but on the whole these rifles have been well received, and complaints have been minimal. Even if you were to swap in actual Milspec parts, is there any guarantee that will these work in non-Milspec upper and lower receivers?

Depends on what you are doing, if you are going to plink on a range if you are comfortable buying one then it should be fine.

Would I use a norc if my life was on the line.....HELL NO.

Myself with a few thousand rds through it and i always went bang, I probably would trust my life it if I had to.:)

For plinking and sport Norinco is fine.

For work, I'm a bit of a brand snob when mine and my friends life are at stake.

For me, Diemaco, Sig, FN, Accuracy International, ect only, no exceptions.
And only Winchester Ranger brand or Federal LE and Remington LE brands for ammo.

That said, Norinco has been making firearms for many years, both for sport and for their's and foreign military's. Not to mention many of the freedom fighters of the world, with repeat business.

Cheap ammo too.

Canadian Tire in Red Deer and Calgary had some 1000 round boxes of Federal for $420 a few weeks ago. That's the cheapest I've seen.

I have one of the first batch of Norc M4 look-alikes that came in, I've had it over a year and here are some observations based on shooting pretty regularly. First, every single aftermarket part that I have put on it has worked perfectly EXCEPT I tried to replace the safety and it was a poor fit. The following parts worked with no issues: MOE stock, buffer and receiver extension, Hogue pistol grip, Stag LPK (except the above noted safety), Armalite scope mount, Midwest free float rail, Dlask ambi sling mount. All mags that I have used have worked without issue, the norcs feel delicate but have worked for me, Pmags, 10 rounders, etc. I have had zero issues. Ammunition I have used has been AE 55+62gr, S&B 55, Win White Box 55+62, PMC 55. Every round has chambered, fired and ejected without issue. The gun shoots around the 2 inch range at 100 yards with me shooting, slightly better with others shooting. The one I have came with a full auto BCG, 5.56 chamber and chrome lined barrel. Oh yes and I've run the Norc upper on an Armalite lower, slightly tighter and slightly better accuracy (or I was having a good day). So now you know better, the next time someone says or posts that Norc M4's don't take North American parts you'll know they're talking out of the wrong end.

If you are worried about all the internal parts being crap, don't buy a Norc. You won't be any further ahead financially.

As for me, I have one and I am just blindly assuming that it will work as intended. So far so good on that one. Seems to bang reliably with factory and hand loads. Basically it suits my purposes and I like it. As for being better or worse than NA made I honestly can't say. If somebody wants to look down in it or me for owning it, fine but they will see a raised middle finger staring back at them:D

The norc m4 is A milspec. It meets the requirements of the special forces of Paraguay. Ok so 3rd world milspec is a bit different however by all reports they have performed fine at ranges, courses and competitions across the country so you should be fine as long as made in china isn't a problem. I know my m305 and m93 are both awesome so i assume the m4 is all good.

Yes you could but why would you? When you say "more dependable", what do you mean? I have yet to hear of a single bolt carrier group failure or anything in the lower go wrong...Yes, the trigger on the Norc could be better but this can be said of many other ARs.

Anyway, not sure if replacing those parts with Colt parts would really do anything for you...the selector would look better though :) Honestly, for plinking at the range, the Norc is plenty dependable. I'm sure you've seen the post but last season's CQB matches were won with a Norc (2nd place as well). As far as I know, they were both running stock internals.

I don't see anything wrong in buying better stuff for a Norc but I think money would be better spent on a handguard, stock and optics.

There is a PS to my post - I went back to the Norc LPK. The Stag one was just something I had lying around, it wasn't bought to address a need - it was put in to see if it would work in answer to a question like the OP's, that was asked some time ago.

Ive had mine for 2 months and its been great. I agree that replacing the innards is pointless unless something is broken. These AR platforms are pretty simple and from what I have heard the steel Norinco uses is stronger than the north american ones. Heard they were made from railway rail steel. Its not going to fall apart on you. Anyways buy what you want but just because you pay more doesnt mean its better. Look at Toyotas from last year. We all like what we have if it works but be open minded, brand whores need reassurance that because they pay more its better. Experiance will speak better than your receipt.
