I'm handloading some .30-06 for a buddy. he buys the components and sends them to me. lives in calgary so he pics the stuff up at WSS. he is a very expereienced hunter, but knows very little about balistics or handloading.

today he goes in and triesto buy a box of 180gr Hornady Innerbonds.

store clerk tells him there are no such thing as innerbonds, only accubonds, and they are made by Nosler, not horady.

then he goes into a tirade about "why would anyone shoot a 180gr from a 30-06?" "only gives you an effective range of 200yrds!" "you should shoot a 165gr! super flat!"

where do they find these guys? such bull####....

And the funny thing is that they have them on the shelf right behind the guy who is tirading...hee, hee, hee. :p

The best way to operate with these people is to know exactly what you want before you go in. Call to make sure they have it....most times they won't anyways and you can save yourself a trip to Disney Land. Then you start to accumulate a list of small suppliers, little guys that actually have what you're looking for. Maybe pay a bit more, but worth every cent of it.

That last thing I will ever seek is advise on ANYTHING from those people, all the information that you would ever want is right here.

Best laugh I got was buying some Wolf ammo in .45ACP and one guy tells me not to bother with them as they where designed for the Thompson. WTF??
Bought them anyway, and had a great time at the range with my Kimber :)

I just love going to these places for the following reasons:

1) waiting forever while the clerk talks to his buddy at the counter
2) coming out empty handed because they don't have what you want.
3) a snooty attitude when you ask a few questions when the fact is that the
fellow hasn't got a clue. When you don't know something act like the other
person is stupid
4) standing behind some guy that feels he has to tell everyone
about all the guns he has.
5) Hearing some guy brag about how he shot a 6 pt bull elk with a 22 win wildcat. " he walked out in front of me and i shot him in the head. He went down and i ran over and cut his throat"
Yes I actually heard someone tell this story.:puke:

I think I'll shop online or at places that treat you better.

Amphib brought up an interesting point: handloading for a buddy. About twenty years ago, I attended a handloading course and it was stressed that due to legal liabilities, do not load ammunition for someone else. Show them the ropes and let them load their own. I don't know how many times I've heard guys yapping "my buddy builds these hot loads for me..." I seriously hope nothing ever happens to these guys 'cause they're widow's lawyer will make mincemeat outta the once bragged about handloader :(

The minute he misses a nice deer/elk/??? cause a shell went "phfftt",
guess who's fault it is ?

I've got a younger fellow I'm trying to mentor along ... he has to sit down at
the bench & do it himself ( with supervision) ... I flat refuse to do it for him.
(Principle more than any worry about litigation)

Not WSS but a Russels funny..I called to order smokeless powder...the kid on the phone confirmed that it was in stock and that I could come in and pick it up anytime...I told him I lived in BC and needed to have it shipped...He tells me... Oh! we cant ship powder way too dangerous...when I asked him how the powder got to his store he thought about it for awhile and said he would have to find that out seeing as its too dangerous to ship..I got my powder from wholesale...

The customers aren't much better sometimes. I asked to see a Remington 710 at WSS just for s**ts and giggles and to see if it was really as bad as everyone says. Buddy next to me remarks, "Can't go wrong with a Remington!". And he was serious!!!

As many uneducated remarks as the clerks make, no one tops the customers.

True, but as far as the clerk should be concerned, the customer is always right.

If I ask to see a product and a clerk begins to give me some song and dance trying to steer me away from the product then the next thing that happens is I request to see his manager, and then I ask the manager if it is story policy to have staff employ negative sales methods on customers. :slap:

Local gun shops are not any better, I overheard the owner of a local shop telling a customer that the reason that the Ruger 10/22 was so good is because it was originally designed as a 223 rifle for the American Special Forces.

Overhead a guy in LeBaron's asking for .223 for target practice - the lady says she doesn't have any in stock. Finally she finds him a couple of boxes of specialty hunting rounds - I forget the type, but very expensive. Meanwhile I had a case of .223 rem. in the trunk that I just picked up from Target Sports. I waited a while for the guy to come out, but he took too long and I had to leave. Otherwise I could have pointed him in the right direction.
