Interesting mod...the OP wanted streamline and he got streamline without affecting the function or effectiveness of the rifle.

Lets see more of what youve got.

Tagged for the next step, will the whole front sight assembly be gone ? I always want a dicated hunting rifle from a SKS.

No but only the front sight will remain.
Time to clean the front end.

First we remove all the excess parts.

Using a pin punch, take out the two pins. One on the bottom of the sight and the other on the top of the bayonet bracket.

Some of them need a little heat to release but most will come off with a gear puller.

Now you're left with a bare barrel and a sight/bayonet assembly in the other hand.

The next step is up to you. You can leave it off or you can trim the sleeve leaving just the sight like this.

The next decision if you want to reinstall just the sight is whether or not you want to keep the present barrel length or you want to trim a little off leaving 18.5" works too.

That will be the next installment .

Years ago I bought an SKS in a Choate stock, the stock didn't allow use of the bayonet so the original owner had simply ground off the unnecessary lugs and protrusions on the sight assembly and cold blued the metal.
Looked nice and clean since the bayonet was no longer useable.

Buy a cheap hunting rifle for cripes sake. What's the point in taking a rugged military carbine and turning it into something "sleek"?... it weighs the proverbial ton and offers no advantage in the bush as a hunting tool.

People like to modify things. Cars, rifles etc. The red rifle is cheap and durable. Might make an interesting project. I might do the same thing some day just to use cheap ammo. Or then I might just play on my computer ha ha. I really want to see how this turns out though.

Well done. I am not a fan of the 5/30 tacticrap mags. Yours is functional and sleek. The as issued mags are a dime a dozen so you can screw around till you get it the way you want.

Normally not one for modded sks's but curious how this turns out! The "short" mag doesn't look half bad.

Looking forward to the next pics... hint hint... nudge nudge ... :)

...having said that, if it keeps you shooting it, why not. There are plenty of refurbs out there... no crime committed by modifying the odd one.

I bet that's what my dad and and his buddies said as they cut down all those 303's to make them handy! Lol

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading through this thread, there are some similarities between the Enfield and the sks. Both were surplus, plentiful and cheap in its heyday. I wonder if in 40 years people will think back to the sks they cut up and regret it or not, personally I don't mind a tastefully sportered Milsurp when you see it. Would I do it to an Enfield now, no way. Would I do it to an sks, only if I could revert it back to stock.

Nothing since April...hmmm did this project get scrapped or put on the back burner?

Interesting ,as I had not noticed the date of the OPs posts.Perhaps I should pay closer attention in the future ,instead of waiting for further progress posts.........ehhhh.....only 5 month off !

I wanted to see what he had in mind for the barrel/muzzle etc.

I`ll check back in another 5 months !

One of the reasons I stocked up on the Chinese and Russian SKS versions ,relegating the not so important ones as project guns ,and never having to say sorry or feel bad about it.

I`m still buying a few more Russians ,both good and whatever ,always good to have plenty !

I can definately see the point as it pertains to the Enfields ,plenty of bubbas out there ,but in the end ,you still can`t beat the full furniture look......tres ###xy !!

No, you can't beat an Enfield in full stock trim. Or any milsurp as far as I'm concerned, although now and again there's a sportered milsurp that a qualified gunsmith built back in the day that pops up and I always think I'd like to have that in the cabinet.
