Anybody have a milsurp mortar that they fire? I believe milarm sold some yugo mortars awhile back and there must be others.

If so what are you using for rounds? Curious to hear about home brewed practice/ flare/ smoke round recipes.

.
About 20 years ago or so, an Edmonton Gun Shop sold quite a few 2 inch mortars, complete with the wood chest.

Later, I bought a couple of hundred fired 2 inch parachute flare pick-up mortar casings that had been at a local salvage yard in Alberta. I also bought some heavy and light 81 mm flare mortar casings.

A friend had a 2 inch Mortar, and we reloaded the base charge very easily after filling a couple of dozen with plaster of Paris. They worked quite well.

I once had a black powder Mortar that would lob a tennis ball sized object well over 500 yards. Used to set it up in the back yard of the Cottage and lob them out onto the lake.

Also have a 2 inch mortar with transit chest I got from Australia but the barrel had been flattened at one end and the firing mechanism buggererd. Had a friend at work make a new barrel but obviously it will not fire. Picked up a bunch of dummy rounds and the carrier for them.
To really make you cry, that same person had picked up a crate of Webleys surplus that he bought for $15AU each and thought he made a profit selling them for $25AU each. THEY WERE WEBLEY FOSBERERYS!:eek:

Couple tried and true compositions I've used.

White flare
Barium nitrate - 38
Mixed Aluminum - 9
Sulfur - 2
Vaseline - 1

White Smoke
Zinc oxide - 45
Hexachloroethane - 45
Aluminum - 10

Non Toxic Easy to Make White Smoke
Potassium Nitrate - 60
Charcoal Powder - 20
Ammonium Chloride - 20

Standard Flash
Potassium Perchlorate - 70
Aluminium (-325 mesh, dark flake) - 30
Best Al to use is Eckart 5413 H Super 3 Micron Blackhead

And please for the love of god if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing don't even think about mixing any of these formulas.

PM me if you have any questions about this sort of thing. Or where to get the materials.

Chilliwackbravosix, thanks for the recipes.

Recce21, don't worry brother; you'll be invited.

For a 60mm:
What about a powder charge ( black? Or win231?) for a lifting charge?

Thoughts on homemade charge increments?

Main charge generally is in something like a 28-bore shotgun shell with no shot. Easily replaced or reloaded.

No reason you couldn't make increment charges to fit between the fins. If I were to do it, I think I would use nitrated paper (as for combustible cartridges), load them up with Unique or something close to it, glue them shut and shellac them to waterproof.

Just put as many as you need between the fins, elastic band to keep them in place, and go play.

You have to be really careful what you are doing. It is REALLY easy to overcharge a mortar....... and blow the bottom 4 inches out of the tube..... sideways.

Before you do ANYTHING, find out the original charge levels and pressures, then approach mil spec cautiously if at all. If the Army wiped out a crew in combat they could always write it off to enemy action. You don't have that luxury..... unless you have a LOT of expendable friends.

Come to think of it.......

Hmmmmmmmm...........................

I was a mortarman for some time in the battallion, and I wouldn't use too much charge to launch the projectile. If you use a 12 ga paper shell in 81mm, and a 28 ga paper shell in 60mm, just use enough pyrodex to almost fill the cartridge. Slip in a fiber wad over the powder and seal it with a normal shotgun crimp. If you put augmenting charges on your bomb, it can carry for up to 2000 meters depending on a couple of things. If your bomb is too light...who knows? Using just the ignition cartridge will launch it 2-300 meters and that's neat enough. Be careful...
