Mosin 91/30 PU Review - lots of pictures

from original post

Hey guys,

Overall the rifle performed flawlessly and I highly reccomened it to anyone looking for a Mosin 'sniper' who isnt prepared to drop 1300$+ looking for what MAY be the real deal. These rifles are as close as the average person will get to a WWII sniper rifle, and they perform excellently! These rifles are available from a variety of sources (site sponsors) and are well worth a second look when considering a scoped milsurp - without the hacksaw and dremel of the bubba!

Great pics and review - thanks. I too have found that Reloder 15 is a great powder, but I use the Hornady 174gr BTHP in my PEM Sniper Repro. Before anybody gets snitty - I'm the last guy to bubba a milsurp. I wouldn't do this to an original Mosin - I bought it this way, and if I wanted one, there are plenty of already spoiled Mosins I could use......

Well said!

How do you find the 174gr work in the 91/30?

Very well. I have a 0.312" bore and these are 0.312" bullets, so that's a big part of the reason. I have other Mosins that go 0.315"+/- and in those cases, you need to go cast, or size down 8mm bullets to fit, then you need to neck ream.......... too much work.

Hey there; Sorry I said that about bubba'ing a mosin. It just didn't look right to me.I guess I was lucky to buy mine back in the early 80's.I have a nice 1943 model with all the right stuff.I just love these rifles ,I have my grandfathers mosin from the first war that he used to hunt with when he came to Canada back in the 20's.When ever I shoot it ,it's like shooting a kentucky squirrel rifle.Anyway's enjoy!!

Got one too & mine is almost like your's ArtyMan except for the cloth wrappings. I was so pleased with it, it's now my new hunting rifle. As of right know it's got 2 coyotes & 1 big old ugly buck. Hopefully more next season!
:D

Thanks! Took me just a few minutes with some old scrap pieces of burlapish marterial. I wish I had a more brown wrap, ah well, can't complain for a ten minute job with spare stuff. Hopefully it'll reduce the ding count, those things just creep up outta nowhere!

artyman did you float the barrel on this rifle?

I was just curious you didn't mention free floating but I was wondering if you had tried it?

I have not touched the rifle in any way. I figured a free floating job, maybe shims or a bed job would help. The rifle shot so good "out of the box" I figured it wasnt worth messing with! If it shot like junk I would tinker with shims or floating etc...

I am thinking of picking up a repro MN sniper. How can one be sure that the scope and mount are all steel and Russian made? I think I read on one site that the scope bodies are made from magnesium aloy or some such thing.
Can anyone recommend a dealer to purchase the Mosin repro sniper rifle from?

Its true that not all PU repros are created equal. I have read a few reviews talking about poor quality metal and rifles that wont hold a zero. Im glad to say that is not the case with this rifle. I purchased my rifle off the EE however tradeex and P&S are both excellent, reputable dealer. Jean at P&S is more then willing to answer any questions and send pictures.
