Just got a Mosin 91/30 ex-dragoon 5 line with a rough looking cocking knob and bolt knob. I have five other Mosins that the cocking & bolt knobs are all smoothly finished. I don't know anything about the rough looking one and perhaps someone can provide some insight on this. Thanks

Your cocking price was produced at the height of mousing production during Ww2 with a feed rate as fast as the machine would go. The bolt handle was finished on either a flat sanding belt or coarse grinding wheel. Much faster that trying to make it round in a lather and you don't tie up a precision machine doing no essential work.

Yep, typical 1942 production for Mosins. Your rifle might be an earlier model, but during refurbishment, they just grabbed the next part in the bin and you got some rough but functional parts installed onto yours. No biggie.

I was thinking about polishing the bolt knob, but now I think I will keep it as is. This adds to the history and is different from my other ones.

Wartime Mosins are rough. My '43 M38 rusts if you give it a wet glance and barely works if you provide any right or left force on the bolt while actuating it. Great bore, though.

They have character.

I'm reading Alexander's new book on wartime production now. An interesting read that explains a lot. By 1942 izhevsk was producing over 7000 rifles per day(!).

Corners had to be cut to get there. Before the war that number was under 1000.
