Finally got my MN 91/30 out with some chicom surplus, and by God does it kick. I was prepared for a recoil but this was too much.
its been a while since I've shot a iron sights so I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to reach out to 200 and place 2 out of 3 on a steel, but I had to raise my rest so that I can shoot upright instead of hunched over, I'm definitely going to bump down any reloads I'm going to make for this beast

I don’t mind the recoil on Mosin rifles as I knew what to expect from shooting similar cartridges. I do notice an increase in recoil shooting my 44 carbine. They are as accurate as any other military rifle from the same time period. I shoot mostly cast bullets in mine but have a few full power jacketed made.

You need to make sure that you are firmly pressing the buttstock in the pocket of your shoulder before you shoot. Leaning a bit forward while shooting standing also helps to control recoil.

I've only ever owned one Mosin. I shouldn't have sold it but it doubled in price and I figured why not?

Well, they since doubled in price again. More fool me. I need another.

Never had an issue with recoil from it. It shot really well from POA at 100 yards. Could always hit a 6" gong with it. Most of the groups were within 3" on the gong.

I should add, I'm not big on recoil. I don't enjoy getting the #### beat out of me. I've since moved to standard/short length cartridges, with the lone holdout being a 7mmRM in a Tikka T3 (which is for sale). But I do miss that Mosin. It shot really well for me.

Have you shot other similar power milsurps such as Enfields, P-14, M1917, K98, etc, or hunting rifles in similar cartridges? Did you find them uncomfortable?

firebat is correct, you want to really pull the stock into your shoulder to prevent any free movement under recoil before it hits your shoulder. If you are shooting off a bench with a rest it also helps to allow yourself to roll with the hit and move backwards with the recoil.

Stock fit also matters. I have a No.4 sporter from my ex-father in law that has a short LOP stock on it. It fits me very poorly and is one of the most uncomfortable rifles I have ever shot, despite .303 not being particularly powerful.

I typically use a slip on recoil pad for shooting milsurps off the bench, you might find that is a big help for you as well.

Are you shooting from a bench? If you are the old steel butt plate milsurp rifles hurt a lot more because of the positioning while seated
best to shoot those old buggers standing up
Best thing to do would be to upgrade to a rubber butt stock vs the steel one, big difference in felt recoil.

I am guessing it's a case of shouldering it properly. I admit I start to feel it after a session out with the 91/30. Careful about the cheek weld too I was a bit off once when firing the mosin and it rang my bell a bit.

You must be extra sensitive to recoil.
Shooting bench? The slippery metal butt pad can have the rifle kick up and hit you in the collar bone. For years I didn't want to fire my No5 LE. My M44 got me in the collar bone.

There isn't much muscle in that area. So when it hits you there, it hurts.

Recoil - or how you experience it - has a lot to do with your body weight.

That's why dieting is not a good idea when you are a shooter.

You need to be adding weight, you are too puny, you need to be upper body density maxxing, get that double Big Mac Meal, do it for your Shoulder.
Everybody anatomy is different. Has nothing to do with your weight if it kicks up into a non protected area. Shooting some guns from the bench just sucks.

Hurt the same as I was 150lbs, and 250lbs. Or 180 lbs still in the Infantry.

The collar bone tends to break in the middle, at the junction of the 2 curvatures. The butt should be far from there. My brother fired 2 shots from an SKS and was traumatised, so I put a sandbag on the buttstock for him. Padding helps.

Bull puckey friend. I weight about 165...MN's are brisk, but not because a person is of smaller stature.
Mindset would be my opinion. If you think it's gonna kick like a mule...you will experience that.
I've shot lotsa big guns, 375 Weatherby Magnum comes to mind. But Dad broke me out in grade 7 with a Marlin Goose Gun running 3" Magnums.
He said " It don't kick, just a big push"
I think I weighted about 110 lbs.
Mind over matter.

But if you hold it wrong and hits you. Hard to train your brain to punch thru. The suck it up and power thru when it comes to mental is what makes people break.

I have a shoulder pad in my range bag. I rather enjoy, than hate shooting.

My kids were shooting it when they were 12 and 9 (Russian M44). I think you are sensitive but yes it does have recoil, similar to my Swiss K11 I would say.

You may not like it, but this is what peak Shooter physique looks like.

Perhaps you can apply mind over matter, but just imagine how much more steeled your mind will be after a Double Big Mac.

The carb coma will fog your mind, and you will not feel a thing.
