Mosin Front Sight Adjustments

First off is there a tool for adjusting the front sight on the Mosin Nagant? I have been using a brass rod and a hammer but it seems so crude...

Also can front sight blades be found in different heights and if so are they available? My Finnish M24 shoots about a foot high at 100 yards so I would like to replace the blade with a higher one.

The typical way of adjusting the height is adding a piece of shrink tubing to the blade and cutting it down to adjust. Other things like wire insulation or pieces of coffee stirring sticks can also be used.

I just recently gave up on such methods and removed the rear sight, and took some material off the bottom where it seats. This allows the rear sight to be lowered, instead of raising the front.

I have it now shooting about an inch high at 50m, but haven't tried it at 100m yet.
 
Thanks for the advise! Unfortunately your front sight fixes won't work on my M24 as the front sight is a blade. I read in a post here somewhere that different height sights were available, just would like to know where. I would hate to have to remove metal off the rear base. I was actually thinking of spotting a bit of weld along the top edge of the front sight (removed from the barrel first) and then filing it down at the range until it shot good.

A very easy quick fix is to hold the sight upside down, put a drop of solder on the blade enough so you have a drop hanging down. Let cool and file it down as needed. You can gain quite a bit this way.
 
Not sure about the front pin on a Finnish version but on my good comradly Russian Mosins I made up replacement pins from a 2.5 inch finishing nail spun in a drill press, a hand drill would also do fine, and "turned" down with a fine cut metal file along with frequent measurements. When done I cut it off about a 1/16 longer than the stock pin, filed the end square and blued it with some touch up blue.

Problem solved. And other than being taller it looks just like the original.
 
I bought an adjustment tool off of ebay that worked quite nicely, though I can't find it advertised anymore. It bascially was a block of metal which fit on the barrel, and had a screw with wing handles that pushed the sight as you twisted. The post was really stiff and I actually needed to twist the screw using a pair of plyers as the wings couldn't provide enough leverage. It worked though. If I can ever find it I'll take a picture and PM it.
 
Take a dremel with a conical/flame tip bit and grind out a small portion of each centre punch mark on the front sight/ base. A small drill will also work. The goal is to remove the distorted metal arround each cent punch that locks the hood and base together.
Then take a large hammer (like the one on the Soviet flag) and forcibly drift the front sight over with a large brass/aluminum pin punch.
It seems crude but they were set and NEVER intended to be moved,ever. They are REALLY on there! I bent the threaded rod on a FRIENDS sight adjusting clamp trying to move my M44's front sight.

Got a perfect height one for mine, they ship to Canada. Another mod I did to one of my other Fins is to put a regular Russian hooded sight on instead of the blade and dremel the post down to desired height awesome sight picture even better than the blade! And the regular front sight adjustment tool for the 91/30 available on ebay does not work on the Fin sight so dont waste your time ordering one. Gentle adjustment with a brass punch is the way to go!
