Mosin M38 questions

I have looked through that website and they aren’t 100% clear when they switched from lined sling holes to unlined ones. I also can’t tell from the pictures if the front sling hole is lined.

The front looks like a proper half-lined sling slot while the unlined rear is correct as well.

Looking at some ammo to feed this carbine. Has anyone tried the Czech silvertip 60’s made S+B or the Chinese surplus 880 round crates?

Rifle showed up with a crack in the butt stock that not disclosed, I do have a 3 day inspection period. I am still quite happy with the rifle as it is in great shape and in the original M38 stock. The crack appears to be very well repaired and isn't that unsightly but I wanted to make sure this stock will hold up to shooting. Also is this possibly an arsenal repair?

I was also wondering if anyone had information about these marks,

That is an arsenal repair....it is obvious in the pictures above if you look at the stock at the butt. It should not affect the regular use 9f this rifle at all.

Looked it up and it could possibly be a toe splice too? Apparently the Russians made some stocks out of a couple of pieces of wood that were too small to make one full stock and spliced them together at the toe. However according to 7.62x54r.net this has never been seen on an M38, I was disappointed until I took the butt plate off and saw the dovetail repair which should be very strong.

Nice looking dovetail job, either arsenal work or a woodworker who knows what they're doing. If it were to start separating, a re-glue and a dowel or two would stabilize it.

I've got an SKS with similar barrel markings (albeit in 7.62 x 39), I wonder if this isn't an import or export requirement?

Further research indicates it might be a Russian Export mark.

Yeah I was quite worried until I saw the dovetail should be quite strong with that in place. Fairly sure it is an arsenal refurb or a toe splice that was made when the rifle was originally manufactured.

The Russians used multiple pieces of wood in some cases to make their stocks. If one piece of wood like you said was too small, rather then discarding that wood they just used another piece of wood and spliced it together. Those markings are russian export marking. I believe it is a Molot export carbine. Looks to be a nice m38

Nice m38....might have to get another one.....I'm debating either another m38, yugo m48 or if I ever get a quote on a Synthetic CZ 308 carbine I'll buy one of them. Mainly I just like the idea of compact light bolt carbines with iron sights. Anyone can use them, there easy to carry and compared to most new products today can withstand a lifetime and more of abuse and still work great.

Yeah I love it, my K98 still has a special place in my heart, those Germans engineered beautiful rifles. But, I compared this one next to the K98 and my No.4 Mk.1 and I am in love with the short stature of the M38 making it nice and handy, and how much lighter it is.

I've always favored the m38 over other models of Mosins. I have several from shooter grade to museum perfect. My farm truck keeps a m38 behind the seat when i go out. Great little bush gun, has no problem to drop a deer up to 150 with iron sights.

The shellac finish is a little worn off where the barrel band have been slid on and off. I am little worried the wood will dry out over time since I live in a very dry climate. Should I touch up the shellac or leave it be?
