Hi there I just completed a purchace by phone with SIR in Winnipeg for a m91/30 looking forward to see what kind of rifle I get. The price is right at $139.00. I just past up on 2 collectables on the weekend and I'm kicking myself now. Does anyone else have a "I've got too many guns!" syndrom? I was hopeing to restock and scope this rifle to see what it could do.

If you want to talk about bubba-ing a milsurp, check out the gunsmithing or sporting rifle forums. We collect military rifles here, not truck guns or cheapo deer hunting rifles.
Ohhh - you might want to put on asbestos clothing right away sir! Since your post count is low here's a tip: any suggestion of permanently altering an original configuration milsurp rifle in this forum is punishable by crucifiction and flaming. If it has already been permanently altered (cut barrels) and can't be restored back to original shape, then it is likely better placed in the gunsmithing forum, or optics for mounting advice. Basically the majority of the (speaking) members of this board's purpose is to restore as many milsurps back to original configuration as possible. Saying what you did is the equivalent of walking into a deep south bar, saying american beer sucks, smacking another guy on the butt and ordering a strawberry daquiri; it just can't turn out well.

The hysterics here aside, your options are kind of limited with an MN, but if you want to start somewhere for fun an MN is a good choice at those prices.
For stocks the options are pretty bad, cheap sythetics etc, really not very good stocks, you might want to consider just modifying the original stock in some way if it is still solid and without cracks near the receiver etc.
You will end up with a side mount scope, like the Russians used, or your only other realistic option is a scout style scope.
For a few hundred bucks you can do a fair amount to an MN, but don't expect too much from one, the barrels are not likely to be that great, and expecting much more than minute of barn is hoping for alot.
That all said, the 54R is a great cartridge, so pick up some ammo as well.

I have a '36 Tula [SA] 91/30 which I bought from SIR over 20yrs ago.
Back in those days , it was nothing to bubba a milsurp....
It wasn't much to look at , especially from an Enfield type of guy .
So , I cleaned some really nasty crap off of it and basically stored it .
Today , I regard it as a thing of beauty...maan , I glad I didn't cut this up.

Take Timberlord's lead and don't change a thing. I know that I keep all of my milsurps (which is all but one rifle) in as top condition as I can. The two that I have need work, but I'm willing to pay for it to keep them in their best shape and working condition. Its a memory thing. These things help us remember the past, and they're so much fun to shoot. I love showing them off to people when they come over. Its like, hey, not only does it look good, and work right, but here's a piece of history. I'll never ever sell any of my milsurps. When I get one, its going to a good home.

I made that one from a barreled action. Reparked, barrel cut and I put a Monti-Carlo stock on it from Numrich.
It shot really well.
I traded it and a SKS-D for a Garand.
