Hello, as I am just getting my feet wet with mosins, I need your help!!! Have what I thought was a 91/30, but 7.62x54 won't chamber, lacking about 3 to 4 mm. Of going home.I'm sure I'm using the proper ammo, coal checks 3.012 +- a couple of thou., There is absolutely no obstruction in the chamber!, Pulled the projectile from a round and it chambered just fine, neck checked out for size, no change! PLEASE tell me what I have here. THANKS DUGIN P.S. it is a 1923 dated reciever, could it have missed the 1930 rework/change. Maybe some Russian/American volunteer brought it back after the great war, if so It must be worth millions hee?

Is this the same rifle you had problems with before?

Could it have been rechambered to .308?

YES IT IS! Hi still alive!! I made a cheep (bondo) cast of the chamber, visual and caliper check shows it to be 7.62x54, I don't have dies, yet or i would makeup a reduced charge round and see what happens.does anyone want to private message me so I can email pics, I don't know how to do that yet, but will learn how because as they say " ain't no good without pictures" dugin

Try visiting 7.62x54r.net to identify what you have. Lots of info there if you can't post pics here...

Thank you pinky!!!!!! WOW what a great site. So I have an m91 ,1923 tula arsenal "late configuration"
. I think I have a lot more reading/research to do. Like was there a round nose round before the present Spitzer round? And was it shorter? Lots of questions to find answers to. Thanks again

I've never had issues shooting any variety of 7.62x54r through an M91. Round nosed or spitzer. That's extremely odd.

OK. desporteriser. .My mistake, it is marked on the round portion of barrel, just ahead of the reciever. The joint between bbl. And reciever is so tight if it wasn't for index mark you would almost think it is one piece. So why won't it chamber a 7.62,x54r round ??? By the way, it is a tula, marked bbl. Next i will reduce mil. load by 25% or 50% and see if I can seat the projectile 3mms and 4mms deaper into the case and see how that turns out. I think I can Chuck shell holder in lathe headstock and Chuck bullet seating pin in the tailstock, and carefully press it in. Can't wait on dies, they don't get here until monday. Thanks I'll keep you posted, but feel to offer help, suggestions, infomation, anything , I need all the help I can get!! Thanks dugin

I'm not giving up!!!!!!! But the last owner /bubba did, maybe he is smarter, no I don't think he is. Looks like there is something protruding into the neck/shoulder area. I think bubba polished or ground the s_it out of the shoulder area #$#%$%. Since last post I have made up 3 shorter rounds, shortest was 2.920" none of them would chamber! So I made up 2 more rounds with full powder charges and hard soap wads, chambered them and fired, the entire shoulder area is spherical in shape!!!! No big deal if I want to fireform cases and shoot it. But it still has an obstruction in there (,in the neck) did a search and found a guy with much the same problem on castboolits, it might be a piece of broken off steel case , another guy said his problem was burnt lacquer from steel case ammo, said pieces he finally got out were hard as steel, so that is where things stand at the moment. The saga continues!! If it is lacquer it may soak out of scrub out or both. But right now I'm leaning towards broken case chip because when I try to chamber a round i am getting shaved metal starting at the mouth of the brass cases, that didn't happen with empty case, it rides up over the obstruction. So this might take a while, I might invest in some cerrosafe, and see what that tells me or not! And/or rent a reamer and hope I don't ruin it, but insurance is cheep! Just lots of hassle/paperwork probably!!! Anyway ain't gonna happen overnight. I'll keep you posted. Dugin

O.K. Good news, I got a shooter!!! Since last post I looked into renting a chamber reamer, they now have a disclaimer that says insurance does NOT cover "hard chamber damage" sounds like others have tried this remedy. So on another site a couple of guys had the same issue, one said to use brass rod , with a chisel point to dislodge broker steel case chip lodged in the chamber. Tried that, but it didn't work, so I scrounged around and found a 5/16 in. Dia. Polishing/grinding mounted stone on an 1/8in. Shaft, mounted it in the 1/4 in. 10 in. Long brass rod and used cordless drill. The obstruction, must have been steel chip was located just behind where the taper meets the neck at about 3 oclock. Ran the stone in the chamber and felt around until I felt the "bump" turned the drill on and moved it back and forth and I and out slightly, for just a few seconds, tried to chamber a round! It was better, bolt handle almost at the locking shoulder!!! One more go at it and it works great now, the bolt cycles just fine. Loaded 5 reduced loads (75% of full load) shot it and the brass shows no marks of damage, some expansion in shoulder area but the neck is tight, no blowby.!! Now to try some full loads, which I'm not looking forward to after some of the comments I heard about the recoil of these mules? Anyway it has been quite a learning experience, I get great satisfaction from working on and fixing and shooting these old warhorses or any gun for that matter, hope she is accurate enough to make the punishment worth it. Wish me luck. Thanks again to all that helped!!!!! Dugin

^^^Recoil isn't that bad if you're shooting bullets that weigh around 150 gr - as the rifle itself usually weighs just shy of 9 lbs. A slip on recoil pad may help (use a cheap Remington one from Walmart-they work great for the price) with both length of pull and felt recoil.

Good luck with your shooting that ol' girl!

Shredder, thanks for the advice, picked up some 148g. And I found the slipon b.p. on evilbay, for 8 bucks shipped! Looking forward to taking her out and punishing the gong!!!! Thank you sir!!! Dugin

Well, ordered butt pad Sun. arrived on wensday!!!! Best 8 bucks I've spent this year, really tamed the recoil, and the gun fits me perfectly, much better than before. Thanks ,Shredder for that tip.Dugin

O.K. Follow up post, finally had some time to get the 91 out and try her on my 115/120 meter 8,inch gong, aprox. distance because the gong is on the other side of the pond! Meant to measure actual distance last winter when the ice was on, but didn't get er,done. This gun has made a believer out of me!!!!!! Open sights, 95 yrs old, THE GUN NOT ME!!! I am only 73 YEARS OLD!??? HIT the gong with the fourth shot, HOLLY CRAP !!!!! I LOVE THIS MOISIN!!!!!!

PS must add, I shot off the table on our deck resting on my elbows, this gun needs a more serious effort, sandbags and a sturdier bench just to see what she and I are capable of.
