Mosin-Nagant 7.62 x 54

Many Mosins are doing fine with a slightly larger bullet (I reload for mine with .311" bullets).

The Nato cartridge is 7.62x51, the Soviet/Russian cartridge is 7.62x54R.

They are not interchangeable. They do not use the same diameter bullet.
 
Most Nagant bores are .311-.312" not .308". Bullets that are designed for reloading the 303British will work, so 174grn round nose or 180grn spire points are the most common for the heavier bullets.

You need to get a reloading manual and read it. That should help answer your questions better.
 
Some Finn mosin Nagants are indeed .308 like the model 28 and 28/30 They will be marked with a "D" if larger like .311-.312" for Soviet ammo................Harold
 
The only markings I can see without taking the stock off is an eagle insignia with an upside down "U " shape below it . I'm guessing this is a Remington production . The only other mark I can see is an " E " , the top & bottom of the letter being a left pointing arrow , located on the bolt assembly .

Any suggestions ?

May be safest to get the barrel slugged to see exactly what you've got for bore diameter. From what I've read they can differ by quite a bit.
Just picked up a Lyman 49th reloading manual, it's got 7.62 X 54R data.

I do have a file full of info I've been pulling off the NET .
I've got a local guy here as well that is into the 7.62 's just haven't been able to hook up ... been playing phone tag !

buy a lyman manual for loading or get ammo in the 170-180 grain range should work good im going to get my mosin carbine out this deer season i think!:D
