I got one from SFRC recently, I'm not sure if they cleaned it or something, but it was surprisingly not totally soaked in cosmoline. There's also the fact that the stocks are shellac finished, which means cosmoline doesn't soak in like it does with the SKSs
 
I'm also excited for my first WW2 surplus rifle (less so about the cosmoline). This is a newb question, but is it advised to get surplus rifles checked out by a smith before use? Like, could there be faults with the rifle that are difficult to see (i.e. not big obvious cracks)? What about checking the headspacing? Where do babies come from?

Some will say you should, I usually don't. Clean it well, make sure the action is smooth and the bore is good with no obstructions. They're really remarkably simple.
 
Hopefully it came with a feeler gauge for checking the headspacing. There are some vids for checking that. If you didn't get the feeler gauge, they are inexpesive off eBay, but invaluable.

Watch a few videos from "IraqWarVeteran" on youtube, he is big into Mosins and has a handful of videos on making them run great with a few tools.

There are also a tonne of ways people use to remove cosmoline, when you do just make sure you are thorough because it could cause sticky bolt syndrome.

Anyone know why some of the Mosin surplus stock have orange markings and the '25' triangle on the receiver?

Internet says it's cyanide for Russian suicide troops, but I doubt that!
 
It is the arsenal mark of a Russian army armory which rearsenaled some of the Mosins at some point in their life. Rarely we see it also on SVTs and SKSes, and SVT scopes when we saw those, about 1 in 20. It is an arsenal code, though I'm not certain which.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping it comes with the standard accessories, including the firing pin protrusiom gauge thingy. I'll probably bring the rifle to my local gunsmith after de-cosmolining it anyway, cuz I'm a big chicken.

How often do people check for excessive headspacing anyway? I'd imagine it takes a ton of rounds to deform the chamber (guess it depends on calibre and firearm type).
 
Of all 6 surplus rifles I have had so far, none have been checked over. I usually read up on what to look for, but have had no problems with anything yet.

Yeah really all you need to watch for is the condition of your casings, they should tell a story about your headspacing.
 
I got mine yesterday. Very good condition with minor chips on stock but. The rifle does come with oilcan and original headspacing tool. It even comes with a user's manual in Russian....
 
Got mine yesterday, good condition except for minor dings and dents which is expected. no brass on the rear of the stock for the sling hole but whatever. Other than that looks good. appears to have very little cosmoline on it as well.
 
Got mine yesterday. As most have stated, there's not a lot of cosmoline on these. The finish on the stock sure looks rough though - Boris didn't take good care of this one. Its a 1939 from Tula and all the numbers match but was surprised to find "made in russia" stamped on the barrel just in front of the rear sights.
