I was talking to a friend of mine last night and he wants to build a 91/30 Sniper.

What kind of Mosin Nagant is required to build a Sniper?

Is there a particular year or model required to be correct?

Are any of the recent imports candidates for a conversion?

Any help would appreciated

m91/30 sniper

Your best bet is to get one from SIR, I got mine in December and it's a 1944 Izzy Ex-sniper (scope mount bolts visible inside of receiver), it was in pretty good shape. The shellac was starting to chip off but the bore is perfect. It looked like hell when I first got it but ran a brush and some patches down it and now has a mirror like shine!, the bluing is also in very good condition. I just redone my stock, being very careful not to remove any markings in the wood and used bullseye amber shellac. I'm planning on re-sniping mine as well. looking for a PU mount and scope and bolt body. Mine is matching numbers so i'm not going to hack at my matching bolt, i'll just get another bolt body and fab a bent bolt for it. I might just got with a sight replacement mount and use a EER scope for the simple fact that I don't know if re-sniping will destroy any value the gun now has. Any more questions just ask.

uhhh i forget which online store (but it's one of the major ones)
oh yeah
P&S
I beleive I've seen ex-snipers on there before.
picking up one, putting a bent bolt body on there, a PU mount and the correct scope type from kalinka for example.
there ya go.

What is required? Proper Mosin rifle made by glorious socialist Stakhanovite workers! Hitlerite fascist imperialist invasion of Mother Russia! And vodka! Lots of vodka!

Seriously, keep us posted on this project, with lots of pictures. It sounds like a lot of fun.

You may be able to find an "ex-sniper". As the name implies, these are former snipers that were converted back to infantry rifles postwar by filling in the mount holes and replacing the bolt handle. They are around, and this is the basis for my sniper project. They're easy to I.D., as they've got the scope number stamped into the barrel on the side, not to mention the filled in mount holes! You can obtain a bent bolt from "Jim the boltman"(google him). He takes a while, but does excellent work for a reasonable price, and he'll either modify your bolt, or provide a new one. There seems to be no problem with shipping to Canada. Mounts and scopes are available from "accumounts" in the US, although it is apparently difficult to import scopes. Your mileage may vary! Or, you can get a scope and mount from fleabay out of the Ukraine or Russia. They don't have the same issues exporting scopes that a US supplier does. Alternatively, Interordnanace in the US has repro snipers for a reasonable price. Considering a DIY project is going to cost $500 or more, it may be well worth importig one. There is Questar here on the boards, or cheaper alternatives like Leroy's big valley gunworks in Montana, who charge a lot less, but make you do more of the legwork...

I thought bubba died in the mind '90's!

Anyways, one thing I thought I should mention. I heard somewhere that ex-snipers are sometimes ex snipers because the barrel wore out. In this case you would have a correctly marked, but innaccurate gun. Kalinka scopes has some good repro mounts, I've been told to look there numerous times. I'd also second the getting a second bolt to be bent if your gun is all matching.

i used a nagant with high action wall important if putting on a PU mount.. bought from a good friend,
bought a pu scope an proper mount off flea bay,
bent sniper bolt off gun broker site.
the surplusgun.com site has good basic info.
went to a very good gun smith he did the drill/tapping ect.
now working on building a pe/pem top mount nagant.
got my svt set up as well.
i think its a addiction

My M91/30 like I said in the previous post is a ex-sniper. And you may be right about the fact that they were not accurate due to wear, but mine shoots a 1 inch group at 50 yards with open sights! and the bore is perfect. I've read that alot of snipers were returned to infantry models because there was more of a demand due the situations at the time of battle. All I know is mine is VERY accurate so maybe I just lucked out!!!

At least in the case of my ex-sniper 91/30, the "bad bore" is a fallacy. It's as minty as the day Ivan carved it out with his file;)

Blake, mine turns out the same kind of accuracy with surplus. Can't wait to see how handloading, a good trigger, and a proper bedding aid the cause. The originals were all tuned as such, but usually lost the improvements during retrofit:(

m91/30

I think i'm gonna try handloading in little while, there's no ammo here in PEI!! I've got 140 rounds of 174 gr brass surplus coming within' a week. I shimmed my trigger and that's where ALOT of my accuracy is coming from. When I first bought mine there was a lot of creep and very hard to pull, so I shimmed the front piece of the spring .011.
It doesnt sound like much but it was a totally different feel. Absolutely no creep and very crisp and smooth trigger motion. I also smoothed the spot where the top of the trigger contacts the spring, because when they were cross milled and actually give's rough drag. I used 3 pieces of soda can tin stacked, drilled and placed under the spring. I diden't bother going with anymore shims because I don't like to push my luck
Of course every gun is different and might not respond the same, I just got lucky and got it right the first time. I also added a small piece of shrink wrap (red) on the tip of the sight post top fix the "high hit" problem and now shoots where it's supposed to perfectly.

I just got my 91/30 from sir and am getting to work on a repo sniper project my self. I got a great sorce for bent bolts if you are interested. Now I just gotta get a PU scope that is black and not green like the ones on ebay...

Check out http://www.7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinReceiver.htm and there is very good pics to help you identify what reviver you have.....mine is a high wall so SIR should have more. I got mine on sale and it cost $119.00. And came to like $150.00 shipped to PEI. I seen a black PU scope and mount last week on ebay and it was MINT! and was a origional piece and had perfect optics and went for $207.00 and I missed it by 30 min!!!

Beware most of those e-bay scopes-they're often advertised as original, but are actually modern repros. I've also noticed there are several grades of repro, some which are good replicas with relatively accurate markings, and others which share the same shape but have very flawed markings. mosinnagant.net is a good place to do some research. Happy shooting!
