i see that there are a lot of MN's on the market these days. between the 91/30 and the 38, what are your preferences? what about the ones with laminated stocks?

do the 91/30 generally outshoot the 38's (probably due to longer sight radius)?

i assume that the prewar 91/30's are better made than the ones constructed when the german army was knocking on the door.

Preference is to have both! :) Here in Canada there are a few on the market, but we have almost no availability in comparisson to the USA.

Yes, all things being equal, the 91/30 should outshoot the 38 due to sight radius.

Yes, 1941 and earlier mosins are better made - though quality picked up again in 1945. Wartime guns sacrificed ALOT on metal finish, but function should be equal. I like the mid-swar guns though as they have their own charm - much like a late-war K98k and they work just as well since the corners were all cut in cosmetic areas.

PS: Laminate guns aren't any better than non-laminates - in fact they make the guns heavier, but they are sometimes very pretty to look at, so I have quite a few of them! :)

I like a little kick from the recoil.....just to let me know I'm still alive.......So I prefer to shoot me M44's/M38 a little more than the M39 or 91/30.

Now If I could only find a minty Finnish 91/30......................

I don't think the carbine's recoil is noticeably fiercer than rifle recoil. What IS noticeably fiercer is the report and accompanying muzzle blast. But actual shove at the shoulder is rather comparable IMHO.

Gotta disagree with you there claven. I've got a whole stable of mosins(not that I'm a collector-leave that to you:)), and I definately notice the M44 having more recoil. The 91, 91/30 and M28 don't leave me bruised at the end of a good session. The 44 does. The concussion is also substantially larger for the guy beside one at the range:D

Well, I guess felt recoil is subjective. I do agree though about the bigger bang, muzzle blast, concussive wave, etc. hitting the dude next to you ;)

Last time I had my 44 out I fired about 30 rounds of surplus heavy ball ammo and I did notice a bruise on my shoulder the next day.

I was shooting in the late afternoon and the muzzle flash was quite entertaining!
