Mosin-Nagant Bayonet trouble

Drove to the Carp Gun Show saturday and picked up a nice Mosin-Nagant M91/30 from TradeEX 160$, no shipping needed. I tried fixing the bayonet once I got home, only to discover that it get severly stuck a centemeter from completely covering the barrel tip. Looking at the bayonet I found that it had a section at the front half a milimeter thicker than the section that slid easily over the barrel. I have a few pictures up for you scrutny, the quality is far from in person but I hope you'll be able to see what I mean.

Pop her back off with a rubber mallet or a piece of soft wood... something that won't damage the barrel, bayo or bluing.

Get some fine sand paper, roll it into a thick tube and ream the bayo socket out until it fits. I think they were supposed to be tight but were then missmatched.

Typically (as far as I know - but I'm no M-N expert) - the 91/30 bayo's were made to get on the rifle, and stay there (so the soldier wouldn't loose it). I believe it was meant to get off only during transport.

On the bayo I got for my 91/30 (therefore not number-matched) I used a round file ("queue de rat" in French - any cool term in English?) to enlarge the inside diameter of the bayonet. Now it still resists going on a bit, so it won't loosen itself (it's quite snug). I reblued the metal that was exposed bare from the use of the file and all is fine. Hope this helps,

"Rat Tail File" ;)

I'm pretty sure that as external barrel machining seems to vary widely on 91/30s that bayonets need an initial fitting to the individual rifle. Factory/armourers probably had a special tool just for this job. Remember that the bayonets that come with these post war refurbs were probably unfitted spare parts intended to be used as required with many, many left over.
 
Lou has it right, they were generally not made to come off the rifle. Try some heat and see if it will come off. I sold one a few years back on here including the bayonet, which was stuck on. The new owner warmed her up and she came right off. Good luck!

I have the bayonet off and I own a "queue de rat". I guess I'll get to matching the fit with the file. For blueing that might have to wait as I have no practical knowledge on that trade.

Thansk Lou, I'd been looking at the Mosin Nagants for a while and see one in the low average price range without S&H plus clear markings from the pre-war constructions I had to take it.:cool:

Rat tail file is what we called it on the Rig's
 
I am also having trouble with my 91/30 bayonet. when I put it on, the bayonet slides on and covers the sight like it is supose to great! now when I push it against the retaining clip and rotate it 90 degrees to the right it doesnn't turn all the way.the retaining clip doesn't lock into place. it seems to need to rotate another 1/8" to click but the notch that the sight fits into only has another 1/16" to go. HELP!
 
They were producing rifles and bayonets just as fast as they possibly could, and doing a lot of it with unskilled and semi-skilled labour. It's no wonder at all that a bit of hand-fitting was required on a part that was supposed to sit solid and stay put.

Buck, buddy, you might have to trim a bit of meat there. I have had this problem several times, as, I think, have most of the guys who have MNs around.

with mine is wasn't the inside that was the problem but the part that fits around the front sight base, i had to file a bit of metal out of there so that it would fit with out tons of pressure, a couple passes with a small file and it goes on and off with ease
 
I guess I should chirp in: I have since filled down the inside of the bayonet and it fits nice and smug. Looking forward to shooting it.

Buck, is the bayonet loose when missing that fraction of an inch? My retaining clip locks where ever I let is rest.

Pictures are worth a few words I've been told. Heres what she looks like.
First shot is before I push againts the retaining clip and rotate it 90 degrees.

Second and third shot are after I have rotated it to its maximum. note the gap from the sight and also the amount it would have to turn in order for it to lock in place. its very snug. and wont come off.....but it SHOULD lock....shouldn't it?

Only way to fix that 1 would be to file it down a tade. OH ya when fitting these bayonet's some times a little oil will stop it from scratching your front post;)
