Mosin nagant bolt problems

hey guys!
I have been to a range today to see how it feels to shoot a Mosin Nagant and found out that some times the bolt does not close when the bullet is in. Pushes the bullet but does not close. Has any one of you had same problems? How did you resolve it? Or any one got any ideas what can be wrong? Some times it goes okey, but some times doesn't want to close - even on same bullet.

Is there anything sticking out of the bolt face?
Did you tear down and clean the bolt well?
Did you clean the chamber well? Sometimes cosmoline can be sitting in there.
Are you using enough force? The bolt on a Mosin can be sticky sometimes.

It could be an extractor issue. Make sure the extractor groove in the breech face is super clean. And the chamber while you are at it. Inspect some of your spent shells and see if there is damage on the rim from the extractor. See if you can clip a cartridge onto the bolt face, with the rim under the extractor, and then see if it will chamber. If it does with no problem, then it is not likely a dirty chamber issue, but an extractor one. Some people will file the bevel on the extractor. Others will carefully pry it back a bit. I actually took mine out, and cleaned the heck out of both the extractor, and the dovetail. And that seemed to fix the problem on mine. Careful though, as they can break fairly easily.

Did you take it apart and clean it . Take the whole bolt assembly apart and clean in hot soapy water. Dry it up and put together. Fixed my issue like that.

hey everyone!
Thank you very much!
I have to admit I have not cleaned the gun before going to the range. Bought it and went to see how it is.
The problem was in the bolt head. Had to use the hammer a little bit as was suggested in video that Caleb314 sent.
Thank you guys very much.

Now I am believing more in cleaning the guns after each use. )))

Good video glad it fixed your problem..

Ammo overall all length (OAL) is often the issue. a tula made one often has radiused receiver to make it easier to close. Often a whack by your left hand solves the problem.

Magellann I hope from now on that is the only thing it will need. I have cleaned it and tried how it works (with a dummy ammo) and it didn't work, but as soon as I hammered the bolt head - 10/10 tries it worked great.

Thank you guys one more time.

Dirty chambers can cause this problem, and sometimes so does Czeck ammo. The chamber cleans easy with a .410 brush on the end of a cordless drill.

Either a dirty chamber or the extractor is too tight. Way to test the tight extractor: take the bolt out, place the round on the bolt face, extractor should hold it, then insert the bolt back into the action and close the bolt. If the round chambers just fine, then extractor is too tight. you may need to file it down just a tad, as well as bend it out (away from the bolt face slightly). It takes a very small change to make it work, take your time and keep testing with a spent case or dummy round.

if you need to bend it out a bit, remove the extractor, place in the vice leaving about 5/8 inch sticking out, then place piece of wood on it and hit it with a hammer.
DO NOT TRY TO BEND THE EXTRACTOR WHILE STILL IN THE BOLT HEAD .... it will break ... do not ask how I know.

Cheers!
