Hi all,
Just got my first milsurp Mosin. I'm not a collector and don't know much about these rifles. I have heard that they were very reliable and simple to use. After cleaning it thoroughly and inspecting it, I tried to cycle some rounds through to check for feeding and ejecting problems. ( Don't worry, out in a field in a safe direction). Boy! Problems! Failures to feed repeatedly and failure to extract also. Seems like the rounds would be stuck in the well of the clip and won't come up to battery sometimes. I checked the well, mag spring and all looked fine. For the failure to extract, the round would chamber but the extractor won't pick up the rim and I have to manually pull the round out. Repeated attempts trying to smooth out the action never really improved it. Kept jamming, both ftf and fte. I have not fired a live round through the rifle yet. Would that change anything?
Anyway, the question is for all you Mosin owners out there is have you experienced this issue and if so, how did you fix it? My store where I got it says that's normal and what do you expect from surplus stuff?
Thanks in advance!

The MN action has a unique cartridge valve. A round is not released from the magazine unless the bolt is rotated to lock.
When the rounds failed to extract, had they been fed from the magazine? Sounds as if the extractor is not grasping the rim.
If you have a MN, that has no broken or missing parts, that has chronic functioning problems, you have an extremely rare rifle.

well I certainly wouldn't say it's "normal", my mosin's are extremely reliable in factory configuration. only seem to have issue when they are moved into aftermarket stocks where some fitting is required. that being said, since I haven't had any issues to resolve I can only speculate that you might want to check the obvious stuff such as extractor spring and mag follower spring. did you do a complete teardown including the bolt to remove ANY/ALL remnants of the sticky stuff (cosmoline). perhaps you've missed some and it's binding things up.

Hi to Tiriaq and tungngroove,
I have tried feeding from magazine as well as individually. I have tried cycling hard and gently. I have tried making the rounds were pointing up towards the feed ramp. I have not had an entire mag cycle cleanly so far.
And yes, I have stripped the entire bolt assembly to the firing pin and cleaned everything. The rifle is bone stock with no after market stuff at all. Am I screwed then? Or as you say, tiriaq, I have an extremely rare rifle, LOL!!

Just to reiterate, are you rotating the bolt to lock every time when you cycle it? If the bolt is just being cycled foreward and backward, its not going to work properly.
It may the that the cartridge valve is defective. You should be able to see the bolt camming it in and out.
To clean the magazine, open the cover, then pinch the follower against the cover. This will release the cover, follower and spring from the rifle.

It sounds like it may still be dirty, even though you say you cleaned it thoroughly. Also a defective interrupter/ ejector can cause those same problems, or a dented cartridge.

Where Tungngroove mentioned having trouble while using aftermarket stocks, it could be you have a refurb stock that is too tigh somewhere causing problems. I wouldn't advise firing it, but maybe try cycling some spent brass or dummy rounds through with the stock taken off and see if you get the same problems.
Do you get the "mosin sticky bolt" at all while trying to extract? Could it be possible that the extractor is just a little too weak as you're getting cases stuck in the chamber? Iraqveteran8888 has some videos that deal with the sticky bolt issues. If this is the case when he polishes the chamber with a 20ga brass brush and some lapping compound "may" help things if this seems to be your problem, but there may be other issues that could solve it.

Any residual cosmoline in the chamber? Might explain the extraction problems. I'd look to the fit of the magazine/triggerguard assembly for the feeding issue. Maybe it is not quite sitting high enough? If it was re stocked during refurb the tolerances may be out of spec.
Very odd to have one of these that doesn't work, there's really not much to go wrong.

You to fire the rnd to get sticky bolt. Check to see that the ejector/ interrupter spring is not hitting the stock & that the screw that holds it in place is tight. BTW, mosins do not like the gentle approach. Work that bolt like you are facing the capitalist hordes coming to oppress the prolitariate masses!

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure I cleaned the action thoroughly. As far as I can tell Dand883. The stock is original. How does one tell if the Mosin stock has been refurbished? All my other toys are synthetic/ polymer stocked. This is my first wooden stocked rifle so I don't know a refurb from a hole in my head. I will check for more cosmolone but pretty sure there is nothing left in the feed system. There is nothing shiny or gooey there at all. I will pop out the magazine and stretch the spring to try and increase the tension and see if that helps.
And yes, tiriaq, I have cycled the action all the way including closing the bolt the whole way. When that happens, it cycles but sometimes the round chambers but the bolt won't close as the round seems to be in further than the reach of the extractor and that's when I have to manually pull the round out. I didn't think a Mosin can be this problematic so hopefully it is something easy. Thanks for the advice guys. If anyone has anymore input, just send them! Appreciate it!
