Mosin Nagant for black bear hunt ?

Few years ago i dropped two white tail with my M44 using that MFS stuff your talking about. They were well over 100 yards and they dropped and didnt even kick. Your rifle should do just fine for you. Just make sure you can put the bullet in the right place.

The cartridge is fine but the rifle is garbage. It's not a hunting rifle, it's a relic. You have an actual hunting rifle, that would be my choice. I've got milsurp rifles and they would be my last choice of hunting rifles. I enjoy them but have no illusions about what they are.

Now where is my Nomex onesie?

They worked well and saved millions of people who fought with them in several wars. A hunting rifle has not been that reliable.

Some one give his fireproof suit a flaming! I would like to do it, but unfortunately my Mosin only gets a 3 foot diameter group at 300m.:(

Well if you compare apples to apples the M98 Mauser resulted in more death. That would essentially make it better. Hell, the Lee-Enfield probably put more people out of action. But the difficulty in mounting a scope on both the LE and Mosin make them much less useful as hunting tools than more modern designs.

So I think the Op is hunting Ontario? Over bait, likely, eh? 35-50 yard shot on a standing/sitting bear...

Time and time again, guys recommend a lever action 30-30 for bears, in this exact situation, but a Mosin-Nagant is no good?

C'mon...

I think the biggest disadvantage of the Mosin would be the sights... you're aiming at a black bear with black sights, and quite likely in the late evening or deep shade.

Nobody is saying the cartridge won't do the job..... It's the platform that is sketchy.... The safety system sucks, the sights are terrible, the chamber is sloppy (like all milsurps), and the rifle weighs over 9 pounds and is 4 feet long..... hardly a good hunting rig IMOP

Similar to a modern Remington then? :kickInTheNuts:

Yes my thought, I don't mind the weight, it is my heaviest caliber i own, not sure if i will be able to sight in my .270 properly before the season, but i have shot my mosin a fair amount and feel confident, where as my .270 has barley been shot & most people are telling me it is kinda small for black bear.

Wouldn't be my first time using milsurp for hunting, i have shot a deer @ 80-100 yards ( no rangefinder) SKS open sights, dropped on impact. Was very happy as it was my first deer aswell :)

If we're going to hijack this thread we might as well point out that most battle fatalities in WWI AND WWII were from artillery fire, not small arms.
