Mosin Nagant in 308 Winchester

I saw my first Mosin Nagant in 308 Winchester today. It was an interesting little rifle with a commercial barrel and sights. At first I thought it was a mistake until I looked at the print on the barrel. There wasn't any of the usual markings found on the barrel just "308 Winchester".
I took out the bolt and checked the bolt face by inserting a spent shell into the bolt face.
Does anyone know who manufactured or did conversions of the Mosin Nagants? Also I would like some info on the manufacturer.

Wow - bizarre conversion! Sounds like a one off sort of thing.

Bannerman in NYC made 30-06 Mosin conversions of dubious quality back in the 30s. Most references strongly recommend not shooting those particular items.

I'd love to see just how the one in your case was done.
 
There was some company in EU making really nice sporters on Mosin actions, some full wood models too. I think it was in CZ or Finland....can't remember where I saw them.

I would suspect Finn conversions before Czech.

A buddy gave me one with some other old guns he got in a trade.

I kept the bolt and stock and sights and threw what was left deep into the bush.
 
During the Korean conflict soldiers had captured Mosin Nagants sporterized on leave in Japan.Some of them looked quite nice!Harold
 
I don't think the rifle was designed for those pressure levels and I would not fire one in .308 unless I used my own reloads which tend to be down around 45K or less which is what the 7.62x54R is meant to be.
 
I was going to post a question on MN 308 when I found this thread, I have one of these rifles, re-barreled to 308 WIN, someone must have spent a bit of money to change barrel , rework the bolt and magazine, most of the original wood is still there. The guy I got it from 30 years ago said it was one of the best and accurate deer rifles he had ever had, I have only had it to the range one time and it shot very well.
 
There is a guy that has been bringing one of these sporter conversions to Montreal Gunshow for a few years now with no takers, I do not think the Mosin action is up to the high pressures generated by the .308 Win either.
 
I shot beside a Calgary shooter Andy T. who used a MN converted to 7.62 x 51 for target shooting. It had an ISU style 3P stock and a big bolt knob. I sniffed at all the hard work to make the conversion, because the top of the receiver was wide open and he had to hang the sight on the left sidewall somehow. But .... he outshot me and proved that it is the man who holds the rifle across his chest and not necessarily the rifle that wins the match.
