Mosin Nagant M44 front sight loose!

Hi,
Once the barrel heats up, the front sight will become loose. It won't slide out of the dove tail. But it will move 2mm left or right with out any resistance.

Option?

I would say the male dovetail is undersized by a small amount. Other than replacing the male portion you could peen the male dovetail or mark it up with a prick punch to raise dimples that would make it act like it was larger than it is. Like tequila does.

Well it loosens up after three shots.. so lets say the barrel is "warm".

I think dimpling may work. Deforming the male side may make the fit a little more snug.

I would peen the female part(on the barrel).

Couldn't I harm the barrel by doing that hammering on the female side? It make sense though, hammer down the female side would make the hole smaller rather than making the male side larger.

If the whole ring moves then the silver solder has failed and ring would would need to be re soldered or peened ... that sight post ring should only move when its heated up with a blow torch and tapped with a mallet , i had to do this to fix the canted sight post on my m38 .. on the full size 91/30 there is no sight post ring the sight post is directly on the barrel itself ..

Wont harm, i had to do this on a swedish mauser and problem solved

yea, I think if I support it really well and make sure there is no pressure points under the barrel, hammering the top will be ok.

Loctite will breakdown with the heat from shooting.

One quick tape with a sharp center punch will dimple the sight base against the front sight post.

I had the same problem with an old M38 I had. My gunsmith took the sight off and put some silver solder on the base and put the site back on, sighted her in and she was good to go until she turned black inside. Best rifle I ever had.

A revolver I have had the same issue with the ramrod latch post. I peened it and loctited it to no avail.
What worked was cutting a small wedge of .010 brass shim stock, peening one end to thin it. I then laid it in the dovetail and tapped the piece up the ramp; obviously the peened end at the fore. The brass is soft enough that the metal will seat into it.
Worked for me, but I wasn't working with a sightpost though; but rather a latch post. The positioning of it isn't as critical as a front sight.
But it hasn't moved in a year + , and I shoot mine lots.

I made a brass shim out of a .22 case I had in the range box. It seemed to make it a lot more snug.

The whole dimpling thing didn't work too good.
