Mosin Nagant M44 - uncomfortable to shoot!? - What should I replace it with?

I've shot and like all those old Russian guns but if your finding the Nagant a little much get your self a nice Russian SKS,they are much milder to shoot and cheaper for ammo.Try to keep your SKS stock, many of the mods aren't as reliable as the original set up.Save your money and get more ammo so you can practise lots!

A buddy of mine has a 30-06 and I took out my M44 with him one day to plink and he was shocked at the recoil. They we're both tossing a 150gn bullet @ 2650fps give or take but my gun was actually heavier than his. Its just something to do with the 7.62x54R cartridge. They all make huge fireballs and kick like a mule.

Should buy a 91/30 or Dragoon rather than chopping an M44. The longer sight planes on these 2 guns makes them more accurate.

I just can't see myself carrying that giant barrel through the woods, or on a quad.

Good luck hitting what you are aiming at with the bayonet removed! Take a close look at the front sight and you will see that they are off-set to compensate for the bayonet.

Plenty of people have chopped the bayonet. Yes I anm sure I'd have to drift the sight to adjust POI but thats fine with me.

A Boyds stock is fine. It only protects the original stock from the wear n tear of field use. Just keep the originals safe somewhere. As for being a dime a dozen, ya that's what so many Lee-Enfeild and Springfeild owners said in the 70's now look how many people want an original non sporter!

It's his rifle to do with what he wants. Give it a rest already.

Personally, I am starting to like the original M44 myself. ;)

As far as other surplus rifles are concerned the only other gun that will be as cheap to buy and shoot is gonna be an SKS.

My issue with that is cleaning after shooting surplus ammo. The Mosin is a hell of alot easier to clean right, as you don't have to tear it down like the SKS.

"Its his gun he'll dow what he wants. Give it a rest", please note the title of the thread and then note how that relates to my postings.

Key point: What should I REPLACE it with?
Not: How should I MODIFY it?

This is exactly what I noticed. My 30-06 weighs 3 pounds less than the M44 and sends the bullet faster but is smmmooooth to shoot.

One of my biggest beefs about the M44 is how scruntched up I get to shoot it prone or sitting. The only comfortable way to shoot it is standing.

I think a recoil pad on the butt stock will solve the length issue!

Do the 91/30 have longer LOP?

I got my wife a PAAST strap on recoil pad for some of the bigger calibers she shoots.

I tested a bunch of my rifles last month and only one hurt me. I think it was the M44. I wish I had brought my wifes cheater pad. I have used before it when testng 375 and 338.

I have an M-38 which is the same rifle; minus the bayonet, & all I had to do was add an AIM recoil pad to it.
It wasn't for the recoil... but the length of pull.
After that, I enjoyed shooting it 75% better.

Honestly... it's just a POO-POO sub par rifle, made quickly & cheaply. (you get what you pay for)

Advice from my PAL course instructor:

"If it hurts-you are doing it wrong"

Also fits a lot of other activities :D

I just got my own M44 that I bought off a shooting buddy.

I love it! I didn't get bruised but I'd learned from shotgunning to ensure I position myself to get maximum contact with the butt plate. But even so I was grinning something like 15 rounds later when I realized that my shoulder and arm were starting to complain. I went to shoot some handgun but there was no way I could hold the gun steady with my strong hand. Shot a few cylinders (revolver) with my off hand and called it a day. No bruising, just "shell shocked" nerves and muscles from the recoil.

I'll probably get either a slip on recoil pad or one of those butt plate replacement recoil pads to make life a bit easier.

I've got an 1898/30 as well. I found that there's only a small amount of difference to the recoil between the two.

So I tried out a Mosin Nagant M44 hoping to get a cheap center fire I could shoot a lot but I just didn't like it. It wasn't very fun to shoot more than a couple mags worth. Especially when compare to my 30-06 hunting rifle which I find easy to shoot "all day".

I'm thinking about what to replace it with;
a Mauser?
Lee Enfield?
would a 91/30 be easier to shoot?

How about a nice Jungle Carbine?

It's okay, they have a nice, soft rubber buttpad.

I banged off 75+ rounds out of my M44 and loved it!! I think partly because I was pissing off a couple of fudds with the fireball and noise :D.
I find it fits me well, and that's half the battle. The Mauser beats me up :owned:, the Enfields are....OK, but I can rock with the Mosin all day

(E)

X2 with cantom... you think your M-44 kicks?

Trade up to a nice No5 with that skinny little 50 year-old-hard-as-fossilized-dinosaur-#### rubber torture, cracked, 2-piece, loose, arsehole stock and put a hundred rounds of nice Greek MkVIIIZ downrange....

Then check your pantyhose to see if you put any runs in 'em.

Lee-Enfields truly ARE fun to shoot... M-44's and No5's... well..... not so much.

I have an East German M44. I can shoot it all day long. I took it gopher hunting last summer and shot several hundred rounds wearing a t-shirt. The 200 gr bullets smack a bit harder, but eh surplus ammo was a breeze.

Hmmm, Can't wait till my new firing pin comes in, so I can give my m44 a try.
But, I am younger then most of the collectors on this forum I imagine, so recoil may not bug me,....till 20 or so more years down the road....
