Mosin Nagant M44 - uncomfortable to shoot!? - What should I replace it with?

I remember firing my Old Mans bubba'd 303 with one hand just like John Wayne.
I was 13 and just soooooo stupid and plenty of guns and stuff to fool around with after school.
Well... it really hurt. Really.

It's weird, isn't it? You'd think short barrelled guns would kick less, as less of the powder is burned inside the barrel. But, the opposite is true.

One day I had to fire off a box of 3 inch magnums through a 14" shotgun...nobody else wanted to fire it after a few rounds, they kick like a #####!

I agree about No 4 Enfields, a pussycat to shoot with the 25" barrel.
 
Compared to the regular 1891/30 an M44 kicks a little more, but a lot of the forces can be deflected/ adequately absorbed through proper body positioning and ensuring that the butt of the rifle is held tight to your body so as to avoid it from "bouncing" off you (the sharp recoil can indeed cause pain).

It's a fun little gun and I would suggest you keep it and use it to improve your shooting stance, sight alignment and picture, trigger discipline and muzzle control as they can be very very unforgiving to even the slightest deviation. Makes it a fun challenge to shoot it accurately :)

this tends to be true with mine as well, and oddly, the M44 is not any lighter, other than by a few grams. The 203gr MFS loads have a bigger punch and much much bigger flame in comparison to the 91/30 as well

No 4's are no pussycats....they kick.....It's tolerable is all. Slugs and No 5's are just fU%King stupid recoil IMHO.:sniper:

Sorry to to double up, but I told my Father in Law about this post comment while we were out deer hunting last week, and it's about the only time I have heard him actually lose it and laugh uncontrollably....thanks very much!!!!:D
 
This topic is making me want to go out and buy an M44 just to see what all the fuss is about, lol. I've shot a Mosin Nagant 1891/30 tons of times, loved every moment of it.
