Mosin Nagant M91/30

I have great intrest in this rifle and have found some online
Their Description:
Mosin Nagant M91/30 Rifles in 7.62x54R. Each rifle comes with bayonet, sling, ammo pouch, cleaning kit and oiler. Overall very good to excellent condition, arsenal refinished. Some parts may be electropenciled to match receiver. $169.00is is their.

Is this good? How great can these things shoot? I would LOVE to use it for hunting white tail and target practice...how fat out can I shoot it accuractly? I know its not the sniper version of the rifle but I plan to but a scope on it after some trigger time with the iron sights. Also how cheap is the ammo for this rifle?

Go buy a sporting rifle and leave the historical rifles alone. This is a no drill and tap zone (or should be).

Unfortunately, the Mosin is not a very economical and easy rifle to scope.
With iron sights, it is a very capable rifle in good hands.
As far as hunting ammo is concerned you won't find factory hunting loads very easily unless you want to buy Norma ammo or load your own.
But a good specimen can be fun to shoot.

I've got a M/N 91/30. It's a good shooter, I find the recoil quite manage-able, though I added a slip on rubber butt/recoil reducer to make to fit me better( I found the stock a-bit short in the butt). I don't target shoot in the regular sense, but my son and I were hitting 2 gallon pails @ 250 paces after an afternoon of shooting(open sights too).
Lately it seems ammo it a-bit scarce though.
I've shot a couple deer with it, no problem.
I did an amateur gunsmith workover on it with tricks I got off of www.surplusrifles.com.

yep, their nice. I have a 91/30, did the same as above tokguy did, floated barrel, lightened trigger (to much at first but good now).

Using on surplus ammo i can group pretty good, of course not as good as a scoped sport rifle but loads of fun for cheap.

I own a sporting rifle and thats why I want this one, something historical. Hence why I said I wanted to get good with the irons sights before I even consider a scope as I enjoy iron sights more anyways. They are too pretty to wreck lol.

It is a great firearm
but it's not made for hunting
it's long, and being historical you shouldnt drill and tap it
the no gunsmithing mounts are a pain in the ***
corrosive steel cored ammo is cheap but not always available. shows up in batches

i would suggest you to but the Mosin, and a case of 7.62x54 once it shows up and use it for fun at the range

The Mosin uses 7.62x54r, a much bigger round. A case of 800rds surplus usually runs about 300$ when all is said and done, that being said lately it has been hard to find. Im not a hunter but for out in the bush I'd suggest maybe an M44 carbine. A "newer" one, can still compete with a surplus 91/30 accuracy wise, from what I have seen between my 91/30 and my M44. I have an unfired Polish M44 (well, unfired when I got it, not now!) and it shoots like a champ out to 400m open sights. With either you will not be dissapointed, a really fun rifle to shoot

I shall look into those models too. Now the ammo being corrosive is that something to worry about? I have been holding off on getting a SKS because of this. If I am out shooting all day and don't clean the gun for 12+ hours or more will it still be okay? Would using a bore snake throughout the day help to make it easier to clean later on and just overall better for the gun? I just don't wanna cause extreme wear and tear and turn these guns into junk. Is there non-corrosive ammo I can easy/cheaply buy for them?

Easy to buy - sort of
Cheaply - not really.

But I guess that depends on what you consider inexpensive? I believe most non-corrosive goes for above $1.00 per round for soft point. Surplus FMJ when you can find it, is around 40-50 cents per round.

I have the M44, and it shoots good, and i can hit targets out to 100 yards, well my range is only 100 yards, but with the grouping i get at 100, i am sure i can hit at 200 and 300 also. And you can put what is called a scout scope on the M44 and m38 carbine versons, just goes where the front sight is, you knock the pins out etc, easy to do

1. If you go into milsurps, ammo is either corrosive and relatively cheap, or non-corrosive and expensive (as a rule of thumb);

2. Corrosive ammo isn't a reason to shy away from milsurps;

3. Drill and tap a $200 milsurp and you end up with a $100 rifle;

4. Mosins are a blast to shoot at the range! But the safety is a pain to use, so...

...5. If you must hunt deer with a milsurp, find a Lee Enfield that has already been messed up beyond the point of turning back and you'Re good to go.

well I have a sporterized 1914 enfield but I have no idea how good it can shoot distance because I don't wanna put $ into to find out its crap at long range.

I use a mosin nagant for everything hunting, target shooting, and reenacting, it'll shoot as well as the hands its put in can shoot, its strudy and reliable, the safty sucks...but the wallop and knock down power of the 7.62x54R round is alot of fun I compare it to the 30 06 ...I use Bell sporting ammo easy to find where I live.

The sported Lee Enfield will probably cost less than the Mosin in any event not to mention easy availability of hunting type ammo. There are more off the shelf scoping solutions for LEs as well.

They are cheaper and I own one now, they jusy don't do not have any historical value to me being all cut up so it can be "sporterized". Big thing for me is using iron sights and mine are removed off my Enfield so the only choice is a scope....unless my shots are taken at under 5 feet away lol.
