I was interested in getting one of these and have read an article or two on the decent accuracy of the rebuilt 44's out there, however I am not a big fan of the bayonet hanging off of the end of it. Are the 38's the same quality of the 44's? Does anyone find any difference in fit and finish or accuracy between the two models? Is one maker better than the other? Does the counterboring of the muzzle make any accuracy difference? I was intending to get one from Jean at P&S but really don't know much info even having looked on the milsurp forums. Anyone have any advice for a person about to contract mosinitis? Thanks, Peter.

It depends on how your's wants to shoot. I have a Polish M44 that shoots just fine with the bayo folded back. Never tried with it out (might scare the precision snobs on the line3screwsloose said:
). Been seriously thinking of getting a M38 to compare them. I got mine as new/surplus. No counterboring. I've heard that cb'd ones shoot fine, the muzzle damage having been removed.

An M38 is just an M44 without a bayonet and vice versa. They shoot equally well, though M44's often have a nicer finished receiver because they were made late war or post war when Russia was winning on the Eastern Front.
M38's have rougher receivers as they were made when the enemy was at the gates, but function will not have been sacrificed - only quality of receiver polishing and finishing.
Of course if you get a 1941 or earlier M38 with a nice bore it should be made as well as any M44.

Hah, ive made it priority that all my rifles HAVE to be able to mount a bayonet. I absolutely love them.
And ive stuck through it, even made a mount for an SKS-D that worked great.
Ok, my ruger 10/22 doesnt have one, but its in a different category.
Personally, i would take the 44 BECAUSe it has a bayonet.
