Most Mosin Nagant's available are said to be 'factory refurbished'. What did they do to them at that factory and what would an original, non-refurbished Nagant look like?

As far as I understand, they replaced broken and worn pieces, restamped or electro pencilled it all to match, then threw them back on a rack.

The SVT 40s got a plum bluing on the bolt and bolt carrier, but haven't seen that on the 91/30's.

Basically it was just upkeep.

H Wally's got it.

An original non-refurb would have worn 60-70 year old bluing, probably turning to patina in places, and little to no shellac left on the stock. Old nagants sometimes look to have an oil finish, but if it is a Russian nagant the shellac has just worn completely off.

You don't see Russian non-refurb nagants here, but looking at a Finnish 1891 or other models will give you a good idea of what one would look like.

The matte black paint is just that. I have some on mine in places and it is only cosmetic. It provides no protection to the metal whatsoever and just chips off easily.
