I see you can get a mosin nagant for $150 or the sniper for $500. Is there a difference in the barrel or is it the same with just a scope added?

Also which online store to order from for the best quality rifles or are they pretty much the same? If anybody has experience with this rifle please let me know.

When Mosins were produced, those that shot notably well were sent off to be snipers. After the war, many of them were converted back to regular Mosin rifles (no more scope). The idea is that all the ex snipers shoot more accurately than regular mosins. Now people are selling ex snipers with PU scopes on them, while some out there are just regular Mosins with PU scopes put on them. You pay more for an ex sniper because they aren't as plentiful as regular 91/30s. I don't know what's up with the most recent batch of sniper mosins everyone's got, but I think they're the ex snipers re-sniperized with replica PU scopes. I've heard the originals are fragile due to time. Perhaps someone will chime in to correct me if I'm mistaken.
The guys at Westrifle are knowledgable on the subject.
Cheers, Al

I generally agree with the above, but in addition to the extra costs: bending the bolt, taping and drilling for the scope mount is a lot of careful work to do it correctly, or a few hundred bucks to have it done. So, If the rifle is scope and mount ready, you're ahead of the game compared to a regular 91/30 with no modifications done.

The question I have is how certain can anyone be that it is a sniper, seems pretty sketchy to me. Anyone can tap a receiver, add a mount and scope and voila, a sniper rifle is born. Like I said, sketchy at best. Flame away naysayers.

I bought an Ishevsk sniper like 2 month ago, 1944 dated serial# BR2564. On Gunboard, there a list of genuine sniper both from Tula and Ishevsk. Sniper were made in block and on the list previously mentionned, there's an Ishevsk 1944 #BR2527, fews digits before mine. My Ishevsk has the old scope # grinded off on the left side of the chamber and the scope, replaced during refurb, have the number restamped on the chamber. The Shellac doesnt appear freshly made as on the sniper clone present on the market. The bent bolt is better machined than on the clones ones. I dont have reasons yet to doubt about the authenticity or that sniper, its clear that was originally made as a sniper. The scope is 1942 dated, SVT type and was refurb at some time, has a refurb stamp on it. its probably the closest Mosin sniper we can have right now.

So they are basically the same. Is there anything special to look for about the scopes.
Usually, the SVT scope used on mosin sniper are CB marked on the elevation turret, meaning that the scope was calibrated for the mosin longer barrel but somes SVT scope maybe not marked CB while used on mosin, like the scope i have on mine. I dont think that would make a big difference in regard to adjustements. Original PU scope have rounded screws head on the turret while repro scope may have flat head screws(particulary the repro scope from Ukraine).

That is some good info. Thanks a lot. How are those old scopes are they worth installing?

Pu scope are basic but very sturdy. For a shooter, you can get repro scope made in russia or ukraine but most original scope will do very well and somes have been refurbished and like i said, very sturdy and reliable. They can stand hard use.

If the notched out wood in the stock to accomodate the scope mount looks fresh then it probably is not original. If it is seasoned with age and has some shellac from the factory refurb then you know it was set up as a sniper by the soviets post war. Just something else to look at.

A refurbed original sniper and a cloned reproduction look the same, but are not. There's difference in collection value and how they were made.
Cloned repros are just ordinary 91/30's made up to look like sniper rifles and don't hold the same resale value an original will.
Depends what you want. Lots of people own repros and like to shoot them. For the money they are not worth making your own up.

Any collector can spot the genuine article. I know the difference and it's not sketchy.

Yes,the easiest way is to look at the front and rear lenses. The original WW 2 sniper scopes did not have coated lenses.

I got my refurb sniper from tradexx, and man did I get lucky, mine is a 44' izhevsk that came with an early square (at the turrets) bodied, black painted pu scope, apparently these are very rare
