I have a chance, to pick up a mosin nagant pu, not online, but locally where I live. I am wondering how to check for authenticity. I've spent several hours googling, but they really don't teach you anything new from one site to the other. or they have very confusing info. It's about 5 times the price of regular round receiver 91/30. I know there are tons of badly made fakes, replica and reproduction out there.

from what I quickly look, the scope and the receiver match. bent bolt (obv) didn't really see other marks, as wasn't really expecting a pu mosin. scope numbers seems to be machine cut, not laser, same with barrel/ receiver numbers. scope covers are old canvass with leather straps, scope mount is electropencilled, but what ever. didin't really look into the bolts. I'm ok if the bolt or trigger group is refurbished. what's the canadian price range? what else I should look for? I'm going to have a second look, hopefully is more prepared and armed with more info. thanks.
 
You haven't mention what is you concern exactly about athenticity. Spotting put together rifle vs proper post war refurb? Or original condition vs refurbished? I guess former, so first thing is to check if rifle has proper serial prefix that is known to sniper, then that she has or has not specific markings. Depending on the year and make they has or has not to be there. Then check serials on receiver, mount and scope. As the rifle is refurb all numbers are most likely force matched. As for price - vendors sell them for $700 plus taxes I guess.

Have you simply asked them were they got it from? It was probally bought online, Find out where then you can get an idea if its a reproduction. If you plan to shoot it I myself would get a reproduction unless your collecting.
 
I guess I want to spot the different between put together (bubba'd) rifle vs arsenal refurb or original. Arsenal refurb is fine by me. primary purpose is for shooting. collecting is a heck of a different ball game
 
Showing us photos is the only way to know for sure. It's probably one of the newer Tulsky imports. If it says "Made in Russia" on the right side of the receiver and it has electro penciling on the scope base it is probably authentic. If the markings are missing from the receiver look at the top of the barrel under the handguard, if that says "Made in Russia" it's probably authentic.

Price range is $550-$750 depending on whether parts are "force matched" through lining out the old number, the bore condition of the rifle, and finally the clarity of the view through the scope.

Apparently the PU scopes were refurbed up until 1968 "Progress "as mine is so marked.Tulsky import. As well windage dial moves ...some don't and are pinned.Doesn't look like it has ever been regulated by the mount...no signs of filing? Harold
 
What is the correct sling placement for these rifles? I've seen pics of darned near ever arrangement but nothing definite.

Sewn end forward, sliding leather loop end to the rear with the buckles of the dog collars on the right side of the stock.
