Well I got to take my M38 today and it was shooting really high, Like probably a good 12" high at 100m (I say probably because it was hitting above the board the target was on). I'm guessing that the front sight is too low, so am I supposed to use the punch in the tool kit to raise it? Or?

My other Mosin has a blade front sight so Im not use to this.
thanks, sorry for my Noobishness.

BTW, quite the loud rifle! I shot it once without ear protection because I forgot to but them in! GAH!

I don't know anything about the Mosin front sight, but my 1943 SVT-40 has a hooded post front sight. If yours is the same, raising it should work. I used a bolt, cut down the center, than grinded and filed to fit the hood and post. I hope this helps.

To go left/right, my sight requires to be punched.

Ran into the same problem as you.
Went to visiting the Mosin sites on the web.... some good info.
Showed it to the local gunsmith... as I didn't even have a vise at that time.
He said he has a better idea. Go on... if it looks good and it works.... go ahead.
He drilled the front post out and a few mm in. He then drilled another hole from the front of the sight body, threaded it and put a set screw in. The front sight is now a post (he even gave me a longer spare) that can be moved up and down, held in place by the set screw.
The whole thing can hardly be seen, and can be -if wanted - completely concealed. He did a very good job. Rifle's too far to take a picture now, but I can recommned the gunsmith who did the job if you wanted. (p.m.)

Yes, it works, but the set screw is worth thinking about. Woh in the world want a protuding bubba sign right at the fron sight?

I just turned a new post out of a piece of nail stock, blued it, and installed it. It's actually too high right now, need to file it a bit. At 100m zero, the rear sight is at 650 meters!

Better too tall than too short though ;)

I want to shoot up the last of the 174gr heavy ball I have before filing the sight as I suspect the 147 Czech stuff in my next crate will hit higher at 100m, so better to zero on that stuff. the heavy ball is too hard on the shoulder anyway!
