Now that I've slugged my barrel and took several measurements all at .313 - I would like some feedback from my fellow reloaders on bullet/powder suggestions for:

1. Whitetail round under 100m - bullet/powder combo
2. Possibility of running into a black bear within that 100m range - bullet/powder combo

Thanks!

There are two measurements when slugging a barrel, inside grooves and outside. Just saying...

For most of my Mosins I shoot better with a .312 bullet. Anything in a 150gr soft point works.

Ah good point. I used my calipers to measure off the grooves, not the rifling on the slug. So with that to consider; do I still try to source a .312 SP?

You will not know how that Moisin handles various bullets until you try them.
I have a P14 - 303 British that slugs .3137" It shoots Hornady .312 bullets quite well,
and -- surprise, the .311 Sierra Pro-Hunter shoots even better.
Dave.

The bullets made for the 303 would work well. I tried the Round Nose bullets in my MN and found they would not feed.

The 7.62 is very powerful, so I suggest a flat based, pointed 180 gr bullet. It won't blow up deer.

I use the Hornady 150gr soft points. They work well and they shoot very similar to military surplus rounds, so no resighting the rifle to change ammo for target or plinking.

I've had good groups with 180s and 200gr as well. There are lots of different loads for this caliber, as well as many commercial loads available.

Lots of mosins shoot well with the standard .310 bullets, have you tried them?

No, I have not purchased any bullets for my MN yet. I just picked up the RCBS die set and did the slug test. I havent been able to find anything around Calgary for .310-.312 bullets. Everything is sold out. I figured I would poll the internet guru's and then look for some bullets online...bulletbarn,xreload...

You can get cast lead bullets in .314 (Lyman 314299 mold comes to mind) but there are others. .314 is perfect for your Mosin. Less than 100M means you can load them light with H4895 and they'll work great for deer and bear.

There's a guy on CGN EE who makes Cast bullets in custom sizes but I think .314 is a standard size.

Lots of ways to skin a cat!

I tried the lyman 314299 in my mint 1934 tula sized to .312 and grouping was ok. I tried a 311284 sized to .312 and it shot much better at 75 yards.
