Any one on here have an opinion either way of the Mosin-Nagant? I've heard many good things about them on an image board I was frequenting, but it seemed like it was one of those, "This is the best gun because it is the best and no other gun is as good and thats it", one sided loyalty kind of things. any idea on the difficulties I might have acquiring one in Canada? General prices? Any info at all is greatly appreciated.

Mosin 91/30s? Lot's of technical info in the milsurp section. Mosins vary from great to broad side of a barn on a good day. Reliable? Yes. Hard hitting? Yep.
Difficulty acquiring them in Canada? Not at all. Some of our sponsors up top carry them. Westrifle's got a vast selection, Tradeex has an ammo and free shipping deal.
If you're looking for info on how to get the best accuracy, the milsurp and reload sections will have some tips.

I have three. The quality varies widely from a mint Polish that is a well make piece of kit, to an octagonal model 91 that was factory re-built to 91/30 pattern (that I like a lot), to a pos "refurbed" pitted, dark bored battlefield pick up that is not worth the $100 I paid Westrifle for it.

They are more than adequately strong, after all they were in front line use from 1891 to the early 50's. I find the working the bolt and loading with stripper clips much more awkward than a Mauser or Lee Enfield. The sights are crude. The trigger pull is long, heavy and imprecise. It is definitely NOT the "best gun". They are an interesting curio to play with if the price is right.

I own a couple, a 1945 Izveshk M44 and a 1928 Tula ex-Dragoon. They're interesting rifles. Simple, rugged, reliable, and if you know what you're doing, can be quite accurate. An important point to note is that they tend to shoot better with the bayonet fixed. Also, as battle rifles designed to be used and maintained by illiterate Russian peasant conscripts fresh off the collective farm, their sights are designed to put rounds into charging beastlike hitlerite fascist invaders of Mother Russia rather than print cloverleaves from the bench. Get a Herman the German or silhouette target, put it up at 100, set your sights to 100, hold on the belt buckle, and be amazed as the rifle consistently delivers 147 grains at 2400 to center of mass. It will do this as long as your shoulder holds up. It's great fun.

Every gun owner should own at least one. Here's why: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinHumor.htm

Your hex receiver may be an ex-Dragoon; might be worth looking into. Agreed re the stripper clip loading, although to be fair I have heard that issued stripper clips work much better than aftermarket. IMHO, Mausers load better than Enfields load better than Mosins with aftermarket strippers.

Re the trigger pull; this can vary; both of mine have quite nice triggers. The ex-Dragoon came that way; I shimmed the M44 using shims cut from a coke can. It was dirt simple, easily reversible, and really improved the trigger pull.

There is a ton of info on them in the milsurp forum, I love mine, it's the second most accurate milsurp I have and ammo is plentyful.

By the way, welcome to CGN! Be sure to read the Newbie FAQ section, one of the moderators here spent a lot of time trying to make this site pleasant for newcommers.

Enjoy

Because I don't really care about my pos M/N I tried the Finnish trigger modification on it (reshape the back face and top of the sear, polish all contact surfaces). It really helped, the trigger is now a lot lighter and smoother but still imprecise let off.

I was thinking specifically an M28/30 Finnish rifle. Are they as rare as I expect them to be?
Yes, Finns are hard to find and lots more money. They pop up for sale here in the EE once in awhile.
Good luck finding an M28/30 in good shape. Haven't seen one in years.
As far as them being the best milsurp around, I'd disagree. Depends what you want and value most.

They are awesome guns as far as reliability, simplicity, the cartridge it shoots is powerfull enough to drop anything in North America, price wise they can't be beat, accurate enough lol.

The only down side to them is that they can be finicky. There are so many in such a wide variety of barely useable condition. Mainly bores being shot out or crowns destroyed by improper cleaning etc.

Some of them shoot very high while others shoot bang on where you're aiming.

Almost all of these can be fixed with minimal effort and cost but you need to know what you're doing. Except for the bore.
My advice if you plan to get one, do not buy one online unless you can get a confirmation on a bright shiny bore from a dealer or the private seller can get a decent picture of the bore for you to prove she is in shooting condition.

I love my M44, one of my all time favorite rifles
