I got a flyer in the mail from SIR mail order about 3 or 4 months ago advertising 2 different types of Mosin Nagant (a carbine model and full-length 1891/30, if I remember right) for $175 each, and surplus FMJ ammo for something like $150 per 200 rounds (which isn't that great a deal). My question is, did anyone get one of these rifles, and if so, what kind of shape is it in and how do they shoot? I've been kicking myself for not getting one when I had the chance, so this post is just salt in the wound, but I hafta know!

They still have them, IIRC in the 150 dollar range. They are all arsenal refurbished, so the stocks have been cleaned and refinished, and the metal reblued to "as new" condition. Don't know about the bores, but the ones I've seen look good. The only downside is the import marks on the reciever(this batch of mosins were imported into the US by Century Arms before they came here, and US law requires markings to be placed on imported guns saying who imported them and the gun info). Not a big deal if you're looking for a shooter, but it degrades the collectibility in some peoples eyes. What are you looking for in a Mosin? A collector's item, a plinking rifle...?

I want a cheap shooter that's durable and easy to find parts and ammo for. The Mosin has all those features, plus lots of power!! :D I'd like to be able to use it for hunting, too. I've taken my SKS hunting before, but it has somewhat limited accuracy (and limited range as a result). The improved accuracy of a Mosin combined with the bigger punch of 7.62x54R would be more practical for hunting, I think.

I looked on SIR's website but couldn't find any Mosin's listed, nor 7.62x54R ammo. They've got SKS's and 7.62x39, but that's it. Where/how did you find out that they still have some left?

I live in Winnipeg, and see them on a semi-regular basis, they've had 'em for a while. I think they might be down to the 91/30's only, give em a call to find out. I haven't got an SIR mosin, but I do own 2 M44 carbines, and they are lots of fun. I know people who hunt with them too, I hear they are excellent bush guns. I find them handy and they point naturally and easily. If you have a budget of 200 bucks, it's a buyers market for them, too. Hope that helps!

dunno, just have to phone around, i think if i recall they came from century arms? yeah, shoulda grabbed one too :( .

Thanx guys! I'll check out that link for sure. Incidentally (I'm sure there are posts that address my question, but I'll ask it anyways) what's the best way to mount a scope on a Mosin? I've looked on ebay and found tons of those bolt-on weaver rails that replace the rear sight leaf, but are they good? They seem kinda hokey to me. Thoughts/opinions?

Personally, If I were going to bubba a mosin by scoping it, I'd go with the POSP scope mounts they advertise on www.surplusrifle.com .
It is a side mount, so it'll take a bit of practice getting used to adjusting for longer ranges etc, but I think it looks really fitting on a rifle like the mosin, and reembles the sort of scope and mount a milsurp sniper might have.

Also, here's a cleaned up SIR M44, I'm holding it for a friend while he gets his liscense. He really scored with this one, it is beautiful.

 Gawd that's gorgeous!! Why must you torture me with pictures like this? Dammit I shoulda got one

I like the side mount as well. Are there any canadian sources? I don't think it'd be too much trouble to get it across the border, mind you.

Checked in with SIR last week, and as of last friday they still have M44 carbines, but no 91/30's...
The ones I have seen look pretty nice, but I think Skippy's mate scored a real gem!

Hey, Doug has a bunch of 91/30's for sale in the EE. Doug sells quality stuff. I bought an M44 off him about 6 months ago. Minty!
Check it out:

I'm hoping that's a beer stain and not a urine stain on your bedsheets there Monty ;)

Very pretty rifle. Looks like the stock has been refinished? What kind of Mosin is it (finn/russkie/yank)? Before I developed an interest in Mosins, I would drool over Tikka bolt-action hunting rifles and then dismiss them as too expensive and "too nice" for a guy like me to ever own. Little did I know, the Tikka factory cranked out battle rifles with the best of 'em, which are available these days for $150 apiece! How cool is that!

I have no idea what that stain is. Probably drunken drool! Lol!
That's a Radom 1955. I don't think the stock has been refinished, just cleaned. This thing has been in cosmo since '55. There's still a lot of cosmo in it, still. That's why I don't think it's been shot, let alone refinished. Anyway, it ain't fur sale! :p

I bought a Fin capture Tula 91/30 from SIR about 20yrs ago .
no import stamps
If memory serves me right it was just under $50 delivered to my door... I shoulda bought a couple more...

It's kinda funny how ugly I thought it was back then .I'm glad I kept it .
The M44's are looking pretty good today , even at 3 or 4 times as much :p

I looked up SIR on Google and got sirmailorder website but they don't list any rifles there, just pellet guns. What is the website you use to find the Nagants?
